The original ale first brewed in 1965 and now sold all over the world. Perhaps the most distinctive Scottish ale on the market and with its rich dark oakiness, this is a serious winter ale.

330ml bottle @ Chez Sophie. Pours a deep dark brown with minimal off-white head. Aroma is cocoa. Taste is fruit cake, chocolate, caramel and malts, very smooth with no single element over-powering. Lovely stuff.

Reddish brown colour, beige head. Aroma of caramel, quite sweet nose. Banana flavour, belgian yeast, malts, brown sugar. Finish yeast, banana, caramel, cloying sweet. Feels quite like a sweet Belgian Style Ale.

Thank you Martinus! Tasting glass from 330 ml. bottle consumed @ “The Tasting formerly known as Mons RBBAG I (2014)”. BBF 08/2022 – seriously dude? Copper red with egg white head. Nose is herbal, syrupy, sweet herbal with lots of sugar, profile is quite Belgian. Taste is lightly bitter herbal upfront followed by strong sweetness, Belgian, cough syrup, thick candy sugar,..; Oily herbal body; I have the same reservations here as I had with Traquair Jacobite Ale, this tastes like an okay Belgian & yet the scores are through the roof, I’m concussed here, is it because it was made outside of Belgium or what?

25/X/14 - 33cl bottle @ The Autumn Gathering formerly known as RBBAG Mons (Gent) - BB: VIII/2022 (2014-1265) Thanks to Martinus for sharing the bottle!

Clear dark purple brown beer, small irregular beige head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: caramel, dried fruits, very malty, hay, cow fodder, bit sweet. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: hoppy, bit of citrus, caramel, bitter, dark chocolate. Aftertaste: some chocolate, bitter hops, pretty watery, spicy, coriander notes. Meh, no idea what all the craze is about. :(

First encountered as an 18-year old vintage at the Kulminator; tasted fresh a few years later. A very classic and famous Scotch ’wee heavy’ with complex fruity and malty aroma, coffee, orange, walnuts, calvados, vanilla; sweet malty taste, dried fruits, citrus peel, mellow but thinnish mouthfeel probably as a result of the long ageing, roasted bitterness in the finish. A great experience this was, now let’s purchase a young one for comparison...

Bottle @ weekly tasting shared by Dutchdrebus and Ansjelaah. Dark brown color with a nice dark red glare coming through, medium to full sized beige head that lasts for a decent while. Aroma is quite faint, don’t get much really. Taste is malts, a bit thin, lightly a hint of roastyness, a hint of raisins and dark fruits, lightly bitter. Decent body, medium carbonation.

This was poured into a thistle glass. The side of the bottle says \"best before June 2018.\"
The appearance was a really dark red close to a hazed over dark brown of sorts kind of color. The head was about one finger’s worth of white foaminess that must have maintained itself for at least a good three minutes before it gently concaved into the body. The lacing was semi-thick and broadened itself all around the glass.
The smell had a strong sweet peatiness overpowering some light roasted caramel notes with a sweet nuttiness underneath. Also, there’s a nice light vanilla and dark fruits really underneath.
The taste was mainly the sweet caramel notes and a touch of the nuts come back through some woody notes (assuming the oak barrels it was aged in). The aftertaste and finish are dry and sweet leading with the caramel notes.
On the palate, this one sat right at a medium on the body with a slight sessionability to it. The carbonation was extremely subdued but that’s okay as the peat helps to maintain the stability of this beer.
Overall, this was a wonderful offering by Traquair for the style and for me.
