Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joes in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a black color with a medium sized dark brown head that lingered and produced great lacing. The aroma was invitingly strong coffee, vanilla, cocoa, wood, licorice and molasses. The flavor disappointed with bitter and dry malts, coffee, licorice, wood and touches of cocoa, tar, burnt malts and cookie dough. The finish was long with burnt malts and coffee. Full bodied. A bit lacking overall but decent.

Growler from Vine & Barley. Pours black with brown head. Aromas of coffee, roasted malts, vanilla, chocolate and wood. Similar flavors. The barrel ageing hasn’t had as much affect as I was hoping. Still a nice brew. Full body with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. I think I like the original version slightly better.

On tap at Rustico. Pours a viscous, opaque black with a thin, creamy, ruddy brown head. The aroma is absolutely perfect, great coffee, the sort of coffee aroma that’s got a hint of fresh berry as well, brown sugar, dark toast, wood, whiskey, a little vanilla. The oak is lacking a touch in the flavor, but the coffee is still there, bready, malty, sweet. Finish is full bodied and a little creamy. I really wanted more oak flavor, but either way I highly enjoyed this.

On tap at the 2010 installment of Stogies and Stouts pouring very stouty looking with semi creamy tan head. The aroma is a bit chocolate, a bit vanilla and maybe some caramel. The aroma is a little on the light side making it difficult to pick out the competing aroma notes. The flavor however isn’t at all light. It starts out with chocolate malts and burnt malts but they’re sort of semi sweet. Just after that a fruitiness surfaces with sweet grapes and dates. By midway a caramel sweetness overwhelms the fruit notes into the finish. I didn’t get any wood treatment anywhere in this. Still, its Wake n Bake, tasty stuff.

Tap @ Dunedin for Stogies and Stouts ’10. So how does one of my favorite Terrapin fare? it’s insane! pours picth black, mocha head. Aroma roasted/coffee, chocolate and a light oak/wood flavor that is not overly done but really brings the W-B to a new dimension. Flavors, perfect oak aged, palate is not overtaken by a massive amount of oak but instead the aging blends very well with the base beer. Warming mouthfeel, lots of coffee, thick chocolate malt and grainy mouthfeel. Finishes smooth with light oak wood and a lingering coffee roast.

Draft at the Taphouse at Ghent (Norfolk, VA): Coffee and currant nose. Black pour, medium brown head, good lacing. Sharper than non-aged with pronounced currant flavor, steeped in coffee. Smoky charcoal finish. Medium body. The non-aged version is better, IMVHO.

Atlanta Cask Ale Tasting Similar in most all respects to the regular seasonal with an added dimension of faint vanilla oak dryness. The cask version was poured from pitchers and lacked the thick creamy head it probably would have shown with a fresh pour to the glass.
