Notes from May 2009 Received a couple months ago from resident red fanatic SuperWhite92. Refrigerated all this time. The newer, sessionable Odell Red he sent was way too intense & raw for me, so let's hope this one does me better. :) Raised dot lettering along the bottom left corner that I can't quite make it out. 2??804 Poured into my DFH tumber, pretty cold. Nice sturdy inch of chewy-looking, lightly tan, creamed head. A slightly murky, reddish brown body. Inactive. Wavelength-like lace. Smell is sugar syrup & plenty of sharply & zesty grapefruit rind, a bit perfumey & floral, & also a touch of something refreshing like cracked celery. Not aggressively raw or fresh, but more solvent-like because of the abv. Taste is first brushed off by it's creamy mouthfeel. Really great initial feel. Malt comes on a little sweet, settling to be doughy instead. Hops are grassy & slightly bittersweet. Nothing too intense, but very sappy & resinous. The bitterness is quite lingering, giving a menthol-like effect. A little clove works it's way in there too which is interesting. The alcohol is in everything, though always mingling with some aspect of the beer. A very tasty beer with a little more demanding heft & aftertaste then expected. Great for a nightcap ...or a lunchtime nap. ;)

Bottle. Pours a clear copper amber with a white head that dissipates quickly to the edges. Aroma has caramel and bready sweet grains with just a hint of earthy grass underlying. Flavor starts with earthy grass and bready sweet grains with some caramel coming through in the finish.

I sorta dig reds and this showed up at my best local shop, had to buy and try. The 12 oz bottle, Cellar Series/2018, is opened and poured into my New Belgium snifter, yep, red all right with a light tan foam rising to the top. An ipa-ish scent, okay start. Tasting now, ipa again, kind of woody, biscuit, a small caramel hit. Okay for sure, buy again? At the price I paid for the bottle, no.

Bottle from Brewers Haven. Dark amber, crystal clear, instant foamy head disappears. Aroma is big caramel malts. Tadte too favors the malt, caramel and toffee notes. Mild sweetness, some latent barrel accents. Tiny bit of alcohol warmth.

From Nov 2006

Poured from 12oz bottle(room temp) a deep amber with a medium sized head of foam that quickly shrank to a fine broken layer with little lacing.

The smell is pretty fruity with notes of lemon citrus and there's some sweet caramel malt in the nose as well.

The taste is big sweet malt up front that is joined quickly by some nice citrus hop bitterness and...the flavour is suggesting to my palate...sour cherries, especially in the finish. No sign of the alcohol in the flavour and the warming really is kind of minimal. I like this Strong Ale.

Bottom line: This is another in their Single Batch Series and another solid brew, imho!

On Tap at BitterCreek Clear chestnut brown thin dense light tan head. Very nice malty woody flavors. Some brown sugar and wood. A little peaty but just a bit. Smooth and hearty.

Tap @ Odell Small Batch Fest 2012. Somewhat brownish, orange appearance with a cream colored head. Fairly toasty caramel malty, somewhat piney, earthy hoppy flavor. Lightly resiny, fairly piney, earthy, caramel flavor. This was pretty good but wasn’t nearly as hoppy as I remember it being three years ago when it was a normal seasonal release.

This would have been exciting if Odell’s came out with this maybe 3 years ago. Now it is just your basic strong red with lots of sweet caramel maltiness all over the place and lots of hops. Too boot its filtered to the core.
12oz bottle, dated 01/2009, willibecher Free State glass.
