New Glarus Black Top took home the GABF's first ever Black IPA Gold! The new category resolved any confusion over this assertively hoppy jet black ale. Cruise the Black Top on a ride of Black IPA discovery and experience exactly what Black IPAs are brewed to be.

Expect this beer to pour a hop forward jet black glass brimming with aromatic bitterness. Master Brewer Daniel Carey skillfully weaves molasses and chocolate malt undertones with a soaring rush of clean citrus and pine hop notes to deliver a drinkable Black IPA. Savor Black Top, like Wisconsin’s miles of licorice ribbons of ink that meander through armies of corn and bovine mowed fields. Enjoy the road less traveled.

Lean into it,.

Bottle from Zach, drunk at the top of Quandary Peak. The nose is licorice, pine sap, cinnamon, coffee, and some light floral notes. Sweet and dusty, with a mild bitterness that hits the spot. Light body, with a lively, grainy, and clean palate. This is a well made black IPA.

Bottle received in trade. Thank you hackobock! Pours dark blackish brown with a creamy beige head that leaves some sticky lacing and trace in the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly malty, tiny fruity and tiny herbal with roasted malts, burnt caramel, grapefruit juice, freshly cut grass, pine needles, dark roast coffee, minerals and orange zest. Taste is bitter and slightly fruity with roasted malts, burnt caramel, grapefruit juice, unripe mango, dark roast coffee, freshly cut grass, pine needles, salty liquorice hard candy, moist soil, kumquats and lemon zest. Mouthfeel is crisp, dry, astringent and light to medium bodied. Finish is bitter with roasted malts, grapefruit juice, unripe mango, freshly cut grass, pine needles, liquorice, moist soil, minerals, ash and lemon zest. Rock solid Black IPA! An easy to drink treat!

Another gusher from New Glarus. Pours almost black. Nose smells just like a regular IPA with only a hint of roast and charcoal. Simple bitterness, lots of piney and nutty aspects. Actually a little creamy in the mouthfeel.

12oz bottle brought back from Wisconsin. Dark brown with a lasting tan head. Soft light roast aroma. Big hoppy flavor and moderate bitterness. Soft roasted flavors are rounding out everything. Very nice CDA or Black IPA or whatever.

Opaque dark brown - black beer, good pale tan head. Palate is crisp and dry, turning softer. Minerals. Mild dark malts with a touch of bitter licorice and malt cream. Nice candy fruits towards the semi dry finish.

Dark brown pour - minimal lace - nose of roast, char, molasses, light smoke, woody hops, mild citrus - low carbonation, medium body - flavor is medium sweet and moderately bitter - some sweet chocolate, burnt coffee - the relatively high hop acidity doesn’t work with the sweeter elements and the citric notes don’t really work with the chocolate and coffee flavors - it’s okay, but kind of muddy and indistinct.
