New Glarus Black Top took home the GABF's first ever Black IPA Gold! The new category resolved any confusion over this assertively hoppy jet black ale. Cruise the Black Top on a ride of Black IPA discovery and experience exactly what Black IPAs are brewed to be.

Expect this beer to pour a hop forward jet black glass brimming with aromatic bitterness. Master Brewer Daniel Carey skillfully weaves molasses and chocolate malt undertones with a soaring rush of clean citrus and pine hop notes to deliver a drinkable Black IPA. Savor Black Top, like Wisconsin’s miles of licorice ribbons of ink that meander through armies of corn and bovine mowed fields. Enjoy the road less traveled.

Lean into it,.

Poured from 12oz bottle from a trade, pours dirty dark brown with small off white head and nice lacing, aroma has a huge amount of citrus and pine on the nose, the flavor between the grapefruit, spruce/ pine hops and the malt is excellent. Well balanced. It has a lingering hop finish however, light bitterness. Wet, fresh hops. I like that it is mild on the bitterness. As it warms, chocolate malt comes out. Medium body gives it high drinkability. Really well made. I’m glad I have 5 more bottles!

12 ounce bottle from cbfobes. Thanks! Pours a clear dark ruby color with a medium sized creamy tan head. Good head retention and nice lacing. Aroma of floral and resin hop notes with roasted malts and a bit of chocolate. The taste is big roasty notes, citrus and resin hop notes, some caramel sweetness and just a faint bit of soy. Medium bodied with a lingering hop bitterness.

Bottle shared by STL Will. Pours with a deep brown near black body with a lasting tan head. Aromas are very fruity and citrusy, hop forward, pine, chocolate, estery and grapefruit. Flavors are a bit on the sweet side for me, estery, chocolate, floral, fruit, pine, molasses. Finishes somewhat dry. Lively bubbles, medium bodied.
