This oak-aged ale is our love letter to bourbon barrels. Barrel Noir is a sumptuous, inky ale that celebrates the velvety texture and subtle heat that only Kentucky charred oak can impart. Born from a blend of American imperial stout and Belgian-inspired dark ale aged in bourbon barrels, this rich brew can be paired with braised beef dishes and dark chocolates. Enjoyed best in front of a warm fireplace.

Sample at Kurtkeller 014: Almanac-tastic 01 on 06/27/2014. The beer pours a dark brown color with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt. oak and dark fruit. Full-bodied with flavors of roasted malt, oaky bourbon and dark fruits. The finish is oaky with a mildly tart fruit aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

Bottle courtesy of rlgk. Pours reddish blackish brown with a rather small frothy blackish beige head that leaves some spotty trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet and malty with toasted malts, toasted oatmeal flakes, caramel, bakers chocolate, charred wood, burnt raisins, hay, coconut shavings, bourbon spiked whipped cream, toffee, alcohol, roasted hazelnuts, Brazil nuts and vanilla fudge. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with toasted malts, charred wood, vanilla fudge, alcohol, toffee, caramel, bourbon, caramelized almonds, Brazil nuts, soil, liquorice fudge and bourbon spices black coffee. Mouthfeel is soft, round, slightly boozy and medium to full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, bitter and malty with toasted malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, shredded coconut, charred wood, Christmas fruit cake, Brazil nuts, caramelized almonds, hay and bourbon. Very pleasant prominently barrel aged malty goodness. Gets a bit old after a couple of sips beings pretty 1-dimensional but we split this 3-ways which provided a very enjoyable experience.

Bottle shared at Josh’s Farewell Tasting, thanks to Leighton, 20/02/14. Extremely dark mahogony brown with a moderate tan covering that gives way to spotting and edgework. Nose is coconut shavings, woody twang, uncooked fruit cake mix, dark fruit, a little raw and harsh in places. Taste comprises mellow dark fruits, cake mix, coconut, dark toffee fudge, light booze, much more refined than on the aroma. Medium bodied +, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a little warming alcohol. Solid.

Bottle shared in London for Josh’s farewell tasting. Picked up in CA. Pours dark brown with a luscious, creamy tan head. General dark malt nose, some lightly torched wood, nips of toasted marshmallows. Lovely flavor, lots of chocolatey malts, more toasted marshmallows, toasted toffee, mild earthy bitterness, light baking cocoa. Medium to full bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Good balance to finish, some rich chocolate, more toasted marshmallows, well ripened dark fruits, faint toasty toffee. Exceptional balance. Wonderful beer.

On tap at Brouwer's Cafe for Big Wood 2013, pours black with a one-finger length of tan head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, light roast, and bready notes. Flavour brings out notes of vanilla, bready notes, butter, and booze. Smooth as hell on the palate, with a creamy palate. Solid stuff.
