Barleywine-Style Ale Brewed with Date Sugar and Granite
We've teamed up with our great friends at TAPS Brewery out of Brea for this beer and we made one of our most complicated beers to date. An amalgamation of a barley wine with a traditional stein beer, this strong, brown ale has an extra level of caramel complexity brought on by our use of granite rocks that were heated to 900º and added to the wort along with a generous addition of date sugar for added gravity. A Stein's Throw is rich with fruity esters and toffee richness, but finishes dry after being fermented with proprietary yeast strains from both The Bruery and TAPS

750ml bottle. Slightly cloudy, chestnut colour with small, bubbly-creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, off-white head. Sweet-ish caramel malty, minimally sugary, fruity yeasty and fruity hoppy aroma, notes of cherry, red and dark berries, hints of dried fruit, date, raisin, plum, a touch of pomegranate. Taste is sweet caramel malty, minimally sugary and fruity, notes of raspberry, black cherry, blueberry, bramble, hints of dried fruit, date, plum, a slightly dry and bitter touch of pomegranate. Oily to viscous, sirupy texture, smooth and soft, minimally sticky palate, gentle carbonation.

Specialty ale apparently made for a Californian brew pub with a fish restaurant attached to it. Off-white, coarse, quickly dissipating head, colour a deep and pure bronze, misty. Aroma nicely and refinedly perfumed, dates, raisins, chocolate, port wine, gingerbread, candi syrup, black pepper, wodka... Taste a rounded fruity sweetness in onset, but in a ’cooked’ and ’sugared’ way (candied dates and figues, apple sauce), citrussy freshness vaguely present, then softly malty, chocolate and caramel, ginger-like spicy accents, in the finish a peppery hop bitterishness along with some warm, non-astringent alcohol. In terms of style, I would classify this as a top-fermented barley-wine interpretation of the old German Steinbier tradition, as it has apparently been caramelised with hot granite rocks.

Odense catch-up from the cellar. Hazy copper with a small white head, Weak fruity aroma, with strawberry and pear and a hint of bread. Very sweet fruity flavour with malt and a touch of alcohol. Clean and well brewed, but far too sweet to be drinkable

Bottle bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours clear ruby reddish caramel brown with a rather small goldenish beige head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is sweet, malty and fruity with caramel, dates, raisins, toasted cereal, alcohol, sweet dark bread, wood, oatmeal, apple jam, glue and hints of liquorice root and cinnamon. Taste is sweet, tiny sour, fruity and malty with caramel, sweet dark bread, dark grapes, overripe plums, dates, hay, brown sugar, soil, toasted cereal, alcohol, dusty oatmeal flakes and hints of apple skins. Mouthfeel is round, tiny boozy, tiny sticky sweet, tiny tart and medium bodied. Finish us tiny sweet, tiny sour, malty and fruity with caramel, toasted cereal, apple skins, raisins, dates, alcohol, hay and wood. Over expectations... --- Beer merged from original tick of Provisions Series: A Stein's Throw on 17 Jan 2014 at 01:53 - Score: 7

Bottle split at the Room 316 Tasting, Tulip Inn Bodegraven, thanks to Kenny the Bruery whore - 27/09/13. Hazed reddish amber with thinnish off white head. Nose is tarte fruits, dates, light sugar, cherry pie, caramel, earthy. Taste comprises tarte dark fruits, cake mix, cherry notes. Medium bodied with bite, fine carbonation, dryish finish with a little boozey do which on the whole is pretty well hidden. Solid stuff.

Room 316 Tulip Hotel tasting with Ian and Colin. Hazy deep amber beer with a tidy pale cream coloured head. Palate is smooth and a little soft and semi dry. Sweetish caramel malt with a touch of dark fruits. Mild malt cream. Trace of spice. Light dry finish. Tastes quite Belgian and is very drinkable. The three of us polished the bottle off.
