Bottle @ The Hague Tasting. Clear dark red color, average sized beige head. Smell and taste malts, slightly sweetness, a hint of overripe fruit. Decent body and carbonation.

AB InBev’s recreation of a beer by the long-closed brewery Wielemans which had been in existence since 1926, hence the old-fashioned label. Pale beige, creamy, thinnish head, colour very dark mahogany, clear with no real fizz. Sweet and malty, but not really fruity aroma of caramel, chocolate liqueur, raisins, candied figs, brandy, cake, meat broth, fried eggs, candi syrup, cloves, dried orange peel, ginger powder and the expected pasteurization. Soft sweet taste of obvious candi syrup (which has likely been used for colour), raisins but no ’real’ living fruitiness, something artificially sweet not unlike aspartame, very caramelly, a bit metallic, rather thin body with low carbo, straightforward but becoming more dryish towards the end, somewhat chalky, leafy hop bitterishness and a touch of roasted bitterness, but the candi syrup sweetness cloys a bit and dominates the finish. Feels artificial like most of AB InBev’s products, but it does reflect a forgotten tradition of ’Belgian Scotch’ beers; reminds me a bit of Gordon Finest Scotch or Watneys Scotch Ale. Not the worst I had from AB InBev, I must admit - but a watered down and industrial beer if compared with the legion of Belgian winter ales which are actually Scotch-style, but refuse to admit it. What does bother me, however, is that this is clearly a lager, and this has been admitted by the brewery in the past as well; it would therefore be technically more correct to classify this as a Bock. I hate it when big breweries make bottom-fermented beers which they present to the consumer as ales! Point off for that!

25cl bottle from a friend. Thick white head. Clear deep amber pour. An odd aftertaste which I can’t place. Not bad.

Keg at Kunstemaecker, Steenkerke, 17/10/14. Rich mahogany brown with a decent beige covering. Nose is sweet maltings, dark fruit, brown sugar, nutty tang, brown bread, toffee. Taste comprises mellow dark fruits, nutty, toasted brown sugar, fruit loaf. Medium bodied, fine carbonation with light spritz keeping the sweetness at bay slightly and upping the drinkability. Ok Scotch Ale (whatever the fuck they are) !

Draught @ Le Trappiste, Brugge. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby / copper brown with small off-white head. Clear aroma of fruit with some vinous touches and notes of malt and hops. Sweetish flavour of fruit and malt, with notes of hops and some sourish touches. Sour-sweetish finish. OK but just that for the style.

Clear purple to red brown beer, small aery beige irregular head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: caramel, sugary, banana, bit metallic, grains, some chocolate. MF: ok carbon, medium to light body. Taste: lots of caramel, some chocolate, banana, little bitter, mocha. Aftertaste: mocha, caramel, some alcohol, little sour, sweet, sugary, more chocolate, banana, some bitter hoppy touch. Actually not as bad as I had feared!

Troche slabienkie i malo wyraziste piwo w stylu Scotch Ale. Piana ladna wysoka jak na Belgie przystalo. Kolor brazowawo bursztynowy. Zapach ulotny i w zasadzie zaden. W smaku lekko karmelizowane. Alkoholu jakby nie bylo.
