Black with thin dark head. The flavour has a spicy heat, maybe from the alcohol but it’s almost like a mild chilli heat. Tasty, boozy and complex.

Sampled at BAB 2016. Thnx for sharing, everyone ! Pours black, good grey head. Smell is roasted malts, creamy, bit coffee. Taste is creamy, pure coffee, sharp roasted malts. Bitter, creamy but bit thin MF . Very low carbo, OK. Spiced in the back, does this have pepper ??? Rerate. Yes, this has pepper. Quite intensely so. Upped the score by 0.2. Should improve the mouthfeel for a higher score.

At BBF. Very thick, creamy, pale beige head, black colour with burgundy edges. Powerful and surprisingly appealing aroma of espresso, bitter cocoa, bayleaf, biltong, smoked herring even, shoe polish, wet leather, dried plums. Restrained but candied, fig-like sweetness at first, meaty and even somewhat smoky umami flavours, soft carbo with oily, viscous, smooth mouthfeel, deep bitter chocolatey malt body turning into coffeeish roasted bitterness as the palate progresses, ending with peppery hops and a lot of undisturbing, whisky-like warming alcohol. I did not expect a lot from this seen most of their other beers, but I have to admit this was a very pleasant surprise, perhaps even one of the best of the festival.
