Blend of an Oatmeal Imperial Stout aged 22 months in 11-year-old Willett barrels and a Munich malt-based Imperial Stout aged 18 months in Elijah Craig 12 year barrels. The blend was then aged on Madagascar Vanilla Beans.
Derivation is our series of barrel aged Imperial Stouts in which we take a variety of recipes aged in a variety of barrels and blend back in an attempt to make an exceptional and unique barrel aged stout. Derivation #4 showcases two Imperial Stouts in which the barrel was the star. Being so, this gave me the opportunity to age the beer on an addition of Madagascar Vanilla Beans to bring more toffee, caramel, and, of course, vanilla to the palate.

Thick and heavy palate. It smells like chocolate cake and roasted malt. Alcohol is hidden in the aroma.

Bottle shared by Tom, thanks! Pours near black with a light brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has lots of chocolate and fudge with sweet dark grains and a bit of roast underlying. Flavor is quite chocolatey with a bit of a brownie note and a hint of roast.

Bottle courtesy of Carl. Viscous black pour with no head. Roast, liquorice, dark bread, vanilla, soy nose. Heavy charcoal barrel. Thick dark chocolate. Sweet & salty taste. Thick, flat, viscous mouth. Heavy roast, soy & vanilla barrel finish. Extremely thick. Bit too salty. I kinda like the lack of carbonation. --- Beer merged from original tick of Derivation Blend #4 on 28 Dec 2016 at 19:41 - Score: 8. Original review text: Roast, liquorice, dark bread, sly nose. Heavy char barrel. Thick dark chocolate. Sweet & salty taste. Thick, flat, viscous mouth.
