The history of Braggot dates back centuries in northern Europe. Braggots are meads made with malted barley in addition to the honey. Our Braggot won a Bronze medal at the 2012 Great American Beer Festival. Brewed with wildflower honey and rich, dark specialty malts, the final product is akin to a Scottish Ale, with an added earthy depth and sweetness. Vinous notes combine with earthy flavors and a touch of toffee and biscuit character with just a hint of alcohol warmth. This is a complex sipper sure to warm even the coldest nights.

Tap @ Beer Temple, medium sample. Clear copper color, short head. Aroma of raisin, caramel malt, honey, bit spicy, like a quadrupel with honey. Bit sweet taste, some malty bitterness, quite dry. It’s not as sirupy as a mead. Really reminds me of a La Trappe Quadrupel with honey instead of a true mead.

On tap @ Beer Temple. Clear red to brown color. Dense off white to beige head. Aroma’s: sweet, red fruit, sugarry, fruit confit, alcohol. Flavor is sweet, fruitcake, caramel. Alcohol feel isn’t very strong, but warming. Medium to full body. Not much of an aftertaste. My first mead, but it wasn’t unlike a BW or Quad (La Trappe Quad actually sprang to mind).

Tap at the Beer Temple, Amsterdam. Poured a clear chesnut brown with a round glass hugging head and lots of broken lace. The aroma is rich fruity and alcoholic. The flavour is strong bitter with lots of liqourice malt, zesty fruit and alcohol on the rich heart-warming palate. The alcohol is really well controlled considering the ABV.

Draft at Beer Temple. Pours clear brown with a tan head. Aroma of port, caramel, Christmas cake, raisin, alcohol. Flavour is fairly heavy sweet with alcohol lingering in the finish. Medium bodied with light carbonation.

Proletariat, NYC tap ($12): Pours a light brownish color with a beige head. Aroma is honey, caramel, light hops, toast. Taste is rather sweet, but it is also surprisingly bitter and hoppy for a braggot. Lingering aftertaste. Might be a little too much for me.

On tap @ Copenhagen Beer Celebration 2013. A massive head on this! Did not expect that at all on a mead, and when it finally has sunken it has painted the sides of the glass with lacing .. Light cloudy dark plum red in color and the head is kinda beige. Earthy strawberries and honey on the nose here, lots of sweetness but not the kind I'm used to in meads. It has a carbonation! Thick and what I will describe as creamy on the mouthfeel. Strong sticky red - flavors here. The honey is not to clear, lots of boiled down and concentrated strawberries. Warming indeed. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, caramel, honey, sweet malt, biscuity malt, alcohol. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, honey, biscuity malt, sweet malt, alcohol.
