The sunstone - much disputed among scholars. Did the Viking navigators really have such a tool that would help them point out what was east and what was west - even on a less than sunny day? We certainly believe so. Many years later no sunstone was needed when Amager Bryghus was invaded by what very much looked like Viking ancestors of American descent. Hailing from Munster, Indiana, Chris Boggess and Barnaby Struve of Three Floyds Brewing arrived not with a vengeance but with very loud King Diamond on their portable mp3 player. This was not a day for slaughter but for brewing. And brew we did. The mellow and dangerously quaffable Arctic SunStone is proof that even Viking warriors can have a more subtle side to them. All hail to Three Floyds.

APA by Amager in collaboration with Three Floyds. Very thick and frothy (hops-enhanced), thickly membranous lacing, irregular, off-white head over a lightly hazy, deep warm orange coloured beer turning into a misty amber with sediment added. Lovely and lively aroma of mandarins, fresh orange peel, lychee, pink grapefruit, biscuit, bell pepper, sweet paprika, marmelade, unripe mango, cantaloupe, vanilla sugar, lightly toasted bread, redcurrant, subtle hints of dry earth, wormwood, pine, tonic water and barbecued chicken. Crisp onset, lots of citrus freshness (mandarin) with sweetish (mango, pineapple) and sourish (gooseberry, starfruit) components well balanced against each other and remaining sufficiently ’clean’, spritzy and initially slightly numbing, minerally carbonation, supple caramelly and biscuity malt body, sweetish but not (too) sweet, very lightly toasted to support a growing hop character, spicy, citrusy and floral, but remaining primarily aromatic as it should be in an APA; the bitterness as such is long-stretched and cleverly dosed, but gentle and mellow, so that juicy maltiness and the initial fruitiness remain equally important. Clean, very aromatic, utterly elegant, completely flawless, light and smooth and extremely quenching, this is an exemplary APA by all standards, the high quality standard of both breweries is undeniable here. The only thing that is out of line here, is the name, because this is a sunny beer in more than one respect rather than ’arctic’... Glad I bought this.

(Bottle) Pale amber colour, slightly hazy, with big frothy off-white head, leaving traces of lacing. Malty, fruity nose with grapefruit, apricots, passion-fruit, crisp-bread and floral, citric hops. Malty, hoppy taste with notes of grapefruit, apricots, dried pineapple, gooseberry, crisp-bread and a generous floral, citric bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Fresh and tasty, another good pale ale from Amager. Nice one.

Tap at Whiteflower Corner. Slightly hazy deep orange colour. Quite aggressive hoppiness, both in terms of bitterness and flavour, but not beyond the point of balance. Supported by solid malty caramel background. Very good.

(Keg at Ølhus København, 20151023) The beer poured amber and lightly hazy. Its head was medium sized and white. Aroma had fruitiness, sweetness and caramel. Palate was medium bodied with medium carbonation. Flavours were malts, citricness, pine, sweetness and bitterness. Aftertaste was hoppy and bitter. A tasty hoppy and still malt-focused brew.

Bottle. Cloudy pale amber with a white head. Aroma of mandarins, herbal lemon, pine, bread. Light bodied, lowish carbonation. Bread, some peach and red berries, with mandarins and herbal lemon floating above and some pine and pepper at the moderately bitter finish. Bit on the strong side for a pleasant quaffer.

Gylden brun klar med høyt kremete beige skum. Svært fruktig lukt. Fersken, sydhavsfrukter og noe røde bær. Middels fylde. Mye fruktsødme i smak også, men mild fin bitterhet dominerer fra midten og ut. Noe tørr.
