Draft at The Cock, Hackney on 3 August 2013. Poured an almost black with a thin halo of tan head. Aroma had burnt malt and coffee, but also a slightly acrid, stale smell. Flavour had some nice notes associated with imperial stouts, but I also got a slightly tart flavour as well as unbalanced chocolate. Almost certainly worthy of a re-rate, I prefer to think there was something wrong with that pour rather than my tastebuds!

Keg at the cock tavern. Light roast socks aroma. Somectartness. Perhaps not at its beat. Choc earthy roast.

Bottled. Black with a nice head. Fragrant nose, licorice, fruit, berries, pine, chocolate, bubble gum. Woody, resinous flavor, licorice, roasted malt, phenols, berry. Reminds me of Expedition in its berry, phenolic character, though not quite as good. A bit scizo, but fun.

Bottle courtesy of Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham, after I crossed their palms with much silver! Poured a lovely deep black crude oil colour with a frothy tan head and lots of lace. The aroma is rich, malty and with a little fruit. The flavour is big bitter and bags of alcohol dominated liqourice. It’s rich, thick and with lots of dark chocolate too. I can’t say I liked the palate that much. The bitterness is derived from the alcohol and that seemed to take over the beer to the point where the palate and the aftertaste became a little unpleasant. Still, it’s far from the worst stout i’ve ever tasted, but i’ll hold off on ordering a crate of this stuff!

On tap at The Cock Tavern, Hackney, Saturday 1st March 2013 Impressive big, dark stout with coffee, chocolate and a nice little tanginess, I have to say whilst I described it as a little tangy I wouldn’t have had a clue about the cranberries until I saw this description. It’s a good beer, really quite decent, but I had better today and interestingly two of those better beers were from the Brodies stable. A7 A4 T7 P4 Ov13 3.5

(Draught at King William IV, Leyton, London, 22 Nov 2012) Black colour with foamy, brown head. Malty, roasted nose with lots of coffee and notes of dark chocolate and cacao. Malty, roasted taste with dark chocolate, coffee, cacao, liquorice, a touch of ashes and a hint of red fruit emerging in a finish with a generous coffee bitterness. Full body, with a certain sweetness. Quite heavy and mouth-filling, but very nice.

Bottle 33 cl. Courtesy of madmitch76. Pours an opaque black with a dense light brown head. Thick aromatic hops dominate the nose atop the roast. Medium body, subtle roast, lowish carbonation, has a tart edge to it that may derive from the cranberries. Interesting. Doesn’t really appear 10.5%. 271212
