Kurofune (means "Black Ships") was the word the Japanese used to describe the American gunboats that came to open Japan to western trade. Kurofone Porter is sleek and forceful, but leaves a winning bittersweet taste of chocolate and coffee on the tongue. "Do not resist the superior might; cunningly acquiesce, and embrace." Kampai!

Bottle sample at a tasting at Tom L’s place. Thanks zvsn. Dark brown. Aroma of chocolate, caramel, some fruitiness, vegetal notes. Sweetish flavor with caramel, chocolate, toast, a bit of roast, and a bitterish finish. Medium-bodied.

(Draught at Bishop’s Arms Folkungagatan, Stockholm, 15 May 2015) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of coffee, dark chocolate and a touch of citrus. Malty, roasted taste with coffee, dark chocolate, dark bread, dark fruit and a certain coffee bitterness in the finish. Medium body, with a touch of sweetness. Solid and very well balanced porter. Very nice.

Re-rate: Tap a Naka-Meguro. Very solid standard porter. On tap at Nakameguro Taproom. Served in a stemmed tulip. Jet black with a modest tan head. Huge chocolate and roasted coffee bouquet on the nose. Bitter roasted coffee with milk chocolate taste becoming more prevalent as the beer comes to room temperature. Nice hints of cacao, licorice and prune also present. Creamy mouthfeel and nice well-balanced finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Kurofune Porter (黒船ポーター) on 11 May 2015 at 00:25 - Score: 7
