Imperial Porter using a blend of 7 different malts.

In terms of hops, we keep the IBUs modest at 35 and hopped the beer entirely with First Gold.

And of course, with Lost Abbey & BrewDog both obsessed with barrel ageing, this collaboration just had to be aged in oak.

We settled on some rum casks for the Imperial Porter, making it the first time either of the respective brewers have aged a beer in rum barrels.

Bottled, from Systembolaget. Black, brief head. Peppery chocolaty rum aroma. Sweet with full body and rounded mouthfeel with honey-ish stickyness. Toffee, chocolate and rum. Peppery warming finisgh. Mature and mellow by now, but also very sweet and a bit bold/unrefined.

0.33l bottle from #176. Exciting. This is a a dark brown one with a really loud fizzing light milk-chocolate colored top that quickly fades. This is one of the loudest beers I've ever had I think - almost like a cider. Anyhow, it has an aroma of subtle chocolate, subtle roasted malts, rum indeed, dark wood, syrup and a little bit of coffee. I was expecting a punch in the face, but all I got was a sweet little slap. That meaning it's not as extreme as I had hoped for, but it's still by all means quite nice this. It's light lively on the carbonation and the mouthfeel is oily. Sweet flavors loaded with rum! Really really present in this. Woody, slightly mouthdrying and salty as well. It's roasted with traces of licorice, something really herbal and definitely smoky. It really has some character this beer, and it really sticks it's neck out there in the imperial porter/stout genre. One of a kind with lot's of flavor, but I'm still not completely sold. Have another bottle that I will leave alone for a long time. 01.02.2013

330 ml bottle. Dark brown body with a moderate sized tan head. Nice barely wine like aroma with malt, caramel, dry fruit, wood, some oxidation and warming alcohol. Flavor gives me the same barley wine feeling. Sweet dark malt, caramel, dry fruit, wood, warming alcohol and balanced bitterness with pleasant level of oxidation. Full bodied and smooth long lasting aftertaste. I have had a few of this one upon the years sins it was released, and previously felt it a bit raw, right know I find it perfect on top. It’s a shame it was my last bottle.

330 ml bottle at home. Dark brown-red color with frothy light beige head that quickly disappears and leaves just a ring. 2/5 score for an imperial porter’s appearance. Aroma is malty, light roasted, wood, alcohol, fruity like dried fruits (raisins etc) in a sweet red wine. Taste is sweet, it’s like the aroma but a little better with the addition of chocolate. If this beer had a better body it would be great!! Light body, oily, soft carbonation, nice alcoholic bitter fruity finish.

Dark brown color with a minimal and quickly diminishing off-whte head. Aroma has notes of toasted malts, ripe red fruits, molasses and slightly barrels. Flavor s sweet, almost cloying, molasses dominates over the rest, red and ripe fruit are also present, some cande sugar and barley malts. The final is sweet, very fruity with notes of barrels and slightl rum.

Brian’s contribution to the tasting. A Lost Abbey/Brew Dog collaboration. A dark opaque brown bordering on black with a filmy beige head. 2 years old, light rum, light woodsy ness. Light bodied, zesty, spritzy mouthfeel. Candied plum, sweet, a bit woodsy, easy drinking with the only heat being in the pit of the stomach. Good stuff.
