Cantillon Crianza Helena is a gueuze bottled in 2008. It is a blend of 40 month lambic from a new cognac barrel, 30 month lambic from a bordeaux barrel (for sweetness), and a 15 month young lambic. It is labeled as 5% ABV.

This gueuze was bottled on behalf of the owners of De Heeren van Liedekercke to mark the occasion of the birth of their daughter. Both 37,5cl and 75cl bottles were available for on-site consumption at the restaurant and 75cl bottles were also available for takeaway. Cantillon provided De Heeren van Liedekercke with unlabeled bottles; the label design and it's application was performed later.

Bottle thanks to Minh. Pours a cloudy orange with small frothy white head that lasts. The aroma is strong funk, oak, earth, and cognac. Medium mouthfeel with strong funk, citrus, pepper, bourdeux and nice lingering dry finish. Stoked to finally try this, very good.

Bottle at DHVL, pours a hazy bright orange with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out wonderful funky barnyard notes, a little bit of a vinous quality, and some grape skins -- also maybe a hint of cognac but it's not prominent -- very complex aromatics with many layers. Flavour is remarkably complex with many layers -- bringing out notes of cognac, moderate barnyard funk, and some dried grape skins. So many layers to this. Medium-to-lively carbonation, which brings out the many deep layers of this perfectly. Finishes on light vinous and cognac notes, with a medium acidity. Rarity aside, this is a pleasure to drink. One of the most complex gueuzes I've had and certainly the best I've had from Cantillon. A true masterpiece.

Bottle @ Armin’s bachelor party, picked up at De Heeren. Thanks Joost! Pours a cloudy dark golden appearance with a decent sized white head. The aroma and flavor actually surprised me a fair amount, as it had a lot more funk and less overly acidic sourness than the other Cantillon gueuzes. Tons of aged parmesan, funk, barnyard, yeast, and tart lemons in the nose. More cheese, fairly oaky, moderately sour, lemon citrusy, horse blanket, barnyard, somewhat spicy flavor with just a mild wateriness on the finish, but that was hardly anything to complain about. Refreshing, funky, and tons going on in this beauty. We had Zomer the night before at Darkness Day and I found it to be slightly superior, but this was quite nice. Another bottle @ JetsonFest III in KC. Fuck yeah

750 ml bottle courtesy of Victor (non-RB). Wow, didn’t think I’d have the chance to try this one. pours tiny hazy reddish golden with a frothy offwhite head that quickly dissipates while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is sour and funky with crackers, lemon juice, grapefruit juice, hay, barnyard, brett, pineapple, dry soil, lemon zest, horse blanket, leather and hints of green apples. Taste is sour and tart with grapefruit juice, lemon juice, crackers, dusty barnyard, hay, horse blanket, dry soil, dried apricots, unripe pineapple and mango, brett, peppery wood and orange zest. Mouthfeel is dry, tart and light to medium bodied. Finish is sour and tart with grapefruit juice, unripe pineapple, dry soil, green apples, hay, barnyard, leather, dried apricots, horse blanket and green grapes. Very sour and tart. Possibly a bit over the top of the sourness but it’s a great beer of course.

Thx. to Gene / Travlr for actually sharing this among some other very impressive beers he also brought - 75 cl. bottle sampled @ RBBSG 2012 - pours a darker shade of orange with little in the way of head - smells of those old falling apart Cantillon corks, mellow earthly, light mushrooms, old lightly soured fruits, lemons and apricots, fruity - taste is lightly bitter, mellow mushroom, falling apart corks, very light wine, white grapes, pears, old lemons, tart, light acidity, plenty of horseblanket, green apples, much like the Nomad not much in the way of the flavours from the spirits carried in the original barrels and if you could ever pick them up, mostly long gone by now but like the Nomad this carries the old woodiness of those barrels as opposed to the taste of the actual spirits, lovely sour - it is fine stuff that aged great, it is age that this probably showed more of itself but any fine bottle of Cantillon geuze will be probably yummy with some nice aging on it, dry, little carb, nicely filling out for this kind of stuff, yummy stuff it is more the treatment and aging - lot of this Cantillon stuff is not an attempt to make the greatest geuze or anything but rather to play with fun flavours and experiments - aging and special nature does the elevation

From notes sampled Aug 19 2010 at Eb’s Pours a fairly clear golden color with a decent white head that shows some retention. Smells of light fruit, grainy and bready with a bit of sweet honey and an earthy funky yeast edge. I get a hint of vanilla or wood tannins but its very faint. The flavor is light fruity and refreshing with just enough tartness to provide some balance. A little bit of sour a little bit of a little bit of funk and a little bit of oak. Medium to light body with a crisp bubbly mouthfeel. I like this beer a lot, but I can really taste the rare. I’m glad I got to try it, but I wouldn’t stress over having it again.
