Genealogy of Morals, the name of one of our most coveted Nietzschean narratives, also happens to be one our barrel-aged imperial stouts. We brewed this wheat imperial stout, added a touch of coffee, and aged it in a selection of bourbon barrels from our favorite distillers.

From notes taken during a tasting a couple weeks back. Tasted beside the Madeira version. Aroma has a stronger roast character and less dark fruit, which may be why the roast shows through more. More coffee character, but slightly peppery. Moderate bourbon notes and light alcohol spice and oak. Pours black with a dark mocha head that lingers on the edges. Flavor is similar to the aroma with quite a bit of roast and coffee notes with hints of green pepper and chocolate. Moderate bourbon notes with some alcohol spice and light oak. Moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with moderate carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice beer. I like that there isn’t much soy sauce in this bottle, but the roast note has a bit of green pepper character. I miss the red wine notes that the Madeira version had.

Shared with Kraddel. // Bottled on 10/2013 // Aged for 15 months in Bourbon barrels (crazy!) // Black, small mocha head. // Huge bourbon vanilla nose, amazing, mocha, thick slick coffee, thick chocolate, sweet chocolate cake, barrel, thick vanilla,… // Thick sweet coffee, chocolate, vanilla, cake taste, syrup, brownies, thick vanilla barrel, light vinous barrel note in the back, interesting, unique, bourbon, brown sugar,… // Crazily slick, lower carbonation, very rich. // Amazing beer.

Thnx to ships Pours black , nearly no head . Smell is bourbon , roasted malts . Taste is bourbon , roasted malts , coffee , chocolate . Nice bourbon aftertaste . Good body and carbo but a bit boozy

Bottle shared thanks to trade with Alen. Pours near black with a ring beige head. Aroma of massive bourbon, roast, vanilla, fudge, dark fruits, boozy barrel and wood with a touch of coffee. Flavour is light heavy sweet and bitter. Wood and barrel notes really coming out in the palate with a mouthfeel like crude oil. Full bodied with soft carbonation. Really excellent!

Bottle. Aroma has got notes of red berries and sweet bourbon. Taste is sweet with notes of vanilla, milkchocolate, blackcurrant, fruity coffee and wood.

Bottle. Pours black with a tan head. Aroma of red berries, chocolate and booze. Heavy, sweet chocolate liqueur and coffee. Smooth mouthfeel.

500mL bottle, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany), pours a motor oil black with a small light brown head. Aroma brings out bourbon barrels, a little vanilla, and significant coffee notes - very elegant and complex aromatics. Flavour is supremely complex, with remarkably deep bourbon notes, followed by coffee and a touch of vanilla. Doesn't get much better integrated than this. The bourbon is certainly dominant, but it is in no way boozy or single-flavoured. The coffee is well-integrated all the same -- probably has faded a touch since bottling. Finishes a tad too sweet, but not too cloying. All in all, another excellent beer from the best brewery around.

Bottle thanks to Minh. Pours a dark bron with medium beige head that leaves sticky lacing. The aroma is roast, chocolate, and booze. Medium mouthfeel with rich chocolate malt and oak. Very impressive.
