Originally founded in 1132, Quarr Abbey is home to a community of Benedictine monks. The Benedictine way of life is one of devotion to prayer, work and hospitality. The Abbey grounds are cultivated by the monks to grow a bountiful supply of fresh food for their own sustenance and to share with the local community. Abbey beers have been brewed by monks for centuries utilising locally grown herbs, malt and barley. Quarr Abbey Ale is brewed to capture the essence of these traditional Abbey Beers and uses coriander and sweet gale grown in the abbey’s own gardens. Find out more here.

Isle Of Wight Holiday Beer#48. More traditional a monastic beer taste than its sister 'Apiary Ale", both available at Quarr Abbey and a lovely place to sip both. Plenty of strength, lots of flavoursome pale Belgian style malts.

Clear deep amber beer, small tidy off white head. Palate is light and smooth, decent fine minerally carbonation. Smooth caramel malts, light cream. Light spice. Banana esters. Crisp pine. A little dried fruits. Light finish. Splendid effort. Tastes better than some Belgian dubbels! Bright and well flavoured. Went down a treat.

Bottle from Buckfast Abbey. Amber-brown with a disappearing beige head and a middling fizz. Sweet, malty and fruity with stewed plums and coriander spice. There's a flavour I can't identify, but which I guess might be sweet gale if I had any idea what that tasted like. Malt loaf through the middle. Caramel and butterscotch then rather take over, but there's a hit of coriander spice in the mildly bitter finish. Overall it's interesting and quite enjoyable, but let down a tad by too much diacetyl.

330ml bottle at Cowes Ale House. Shared with Finn. Pearl white head, clear dark amber body, dotted spots on the glassware. Prominent dried fruity aromas, hints of caramel as well. Fine blended taste of plums and caramel supported by yeasty fruitiness. Ends mid-sweet malt-fruity. Fine depth. Likeable. (Cowes 20.10.2022).

Bottle from Cider Barn, Godshill. Aroma is extremely sweet - sugary and dark fruits. Clear brown. Foamy off-white head. Sweet - as per aroma, sugar and fruit. A hint if sharp berries. Develops boozy grainy bitterness alongside spice. Light-medium bodied. Slick. Soft carbonation. Long astringent finish. Enjoyable stuff.

Rocky off white head left a froth on a tea coloured still body. Berry & spice aroma. Medium bodied, nicely carbonated with a smooth back. Sweet jam, heavy spices, red berry, raisin & herbal tastes. Good one.
