Modeled after a hugely popular English style of the day, it offers a garnet-brown color, deep, roasty aroma and flavor, balanced by some smooth maltiness and aggressive hopping.

Catch up rating from notes, 2012: Bottle from American Heritage Beer collection picked up at Ramstein Shopette. Pours out a dark, but clear brown, small bubbly head which soon subsides. Aroma is dark malts, hint of bitter chocolate. Taste is mildly sweet, without a lot of the bitterness normally found in the style. Beer seems watery, thin. Kind of a bit off to my taste, but supposedly brewed from a historical recipe.

Picked up at Publix. Pours a dull brown with copper hues and weak tan head. The aroma is mainly dark fruits with black grape puree and blueberries mixing with a hint of malts and a dash of roastiness. The taste is much the same with dark berries and ripe dark grapes and thin body. It gets a touch malty into the finish.

Deep brown coloured body with a nice dense tan head. Clear near the bottom of the beer with cola and ruby highlights definitely coming through. Aroma of metal, blood, malt, nuts, tobacco, nuts and a faint concord grape essence. Medium-bodied; Strong metallic and nuttiness up front mellowed by a bit of a malt dose, but then rounded out by some metal and nuts - not too pleasant to finish it off. Aftertaste has a distinctly bittering feeling - nothing great at all. Alcohol, nuts and metal are all very noticeable. Overall, a pretty overly aggressive beer - too much malt, nuts and especially metal to make this one an enjoyable beer. Worth passing on, without a doubt. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased after SEVERAL attempts to buy the single bottle, at H-Mart (a Korean grocery store) in Fairfax, Virginia on 08-January-2008.

Bottle. Smokey chocolate malt aroma. Dark brown with small tan head. Very light smokey chocolate malt flavor - extremely weak and watery especially for the style. Tastes okay but way too weak.

Bottle Pours a very dark but clear brown with dark red edges. Large fluffy tan head and coarse spotty lacing. Chocolate malt aroma with cola notes. Lightly roasted flavor with slightly smokey aftertaste. Quite thin and unsubstatial. Soft carbonation and a general leaving something o be desired. Thanks though to Degarth for sending this sample.

Pours a jat black with no head. Aroma is non-existent. Flavor is light chocolate malts but that is really a stretch. Very water and thin. All wrong in all catagories.

Sour, Chalky. Two years out of production.... Theryβre selling this in a "Historic Pak" here in Tennessee. Probably was a decent porter when fresh.

Deep garnet color with medium head and good lacing. Sweet aroma with notes of caramel and coffee. Flavor is balanced with mild roasted and sweet notes. Definitely tastes like it has traits of multiple beers - my idea of what traditional porter must have tasted like. Not great integration though. A bit sharp in flavor and aroma.

Light brown colour with limited head. The aroma is caramelly with molasses accents and a hint of nuttiness. The body is thin and spritzy, the flavour sweet. The dark malts promised by the aroma never really appear on the palate, which finishes poorly with an accent on wateriness.
