Inspiration comes from many sources. The inspiration for Sawyer's Triple came from namesake Sawyer Benjamin Sherwood, the 8-year-old son of Stone brewer Bill Sherwood and his wife, Janis. Over a period of four years, we had the distinct pleasure of getting to know Sawyer via his visits to the brewery or at the occasional backyard BBQ. An engaging and athletic kid if you ever knew one! In early 2003 Sawyer was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy—also known as ALD—a rare neurodegenerative disease. At the time of the original creation of this beer and writing of this label in August 2003, Sawyer was in a fight for his life.

It felt like a crushing blow when we lost Sawyer in September 2003, only days before the initial release of Sawyer's Triple. The outpouring of support from family, the community, and fans of Stone Brewing brought comfort and solace to such a great degree that it simply cannot be expressed in words. When you enjoy this brew, we encourage you to lift a glass to the noble fight in all of us. When your own fight is overwhelming, remember to seek help. And when you are able to, offer help to others. On Sawyer's behalf, and for all who need assistance with their own fight, we thank you for yours...

This beer has been dedicated to Sawyer and to the courage in all of us. To not giving up, even when it may appear impossible to win. For those like Sawyer, who possess an indomitable spirit, giving up is never an option. Such people inspire others, and so have we been inspired to help fight for awareness, research, understanding, and ultimately, a cure for ALD. As with any important battle, this fight is invaluably aided by help from our friends. Pulling together for a common cause is as elemental to the human spirit as the search for knowledge and betterment.

We at Stone and the Sherwood family would like to honor and thank all those who have generously donated their resources towards the creation of this brew. 100% of the proceeds from the sale of this beer originally went towards ALD causes and charities, and it is no different today. Attendees at our fundraising Stone anniversary celebrations have become accustomed to seeing the “Fight ALD” booth. Created by Sawyer’s mother, Janis Sherwood, Fight ALD is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to spread awareness for the all-important early detection of the disease and search for its cure.

Bottle from cquiroga, sampled with badnewsbeers. Hazy yellow-orange body, thin off-white head. Displays effervescent carbonation. Potent clove notes in the nose, with crackers, light fruits (white grape, pear), bananas, and alcohol. Tightly carbonated body, estery, with clove and banana paired with sweet fermented white grape, apple, and pear notes. Grassy hops. Low alcohol presence. A solid Tripel that doesn’t reach the heights of the best renditions, but nonetheless displays enough complexity to contend. This aged quite well.

This beer is a rarity that I received in a trade so long ago and I have been waiting for the time when i could share it with people who would most enjoy and appreciate it. I have kept in in my fridge all that time and noting that some of the ratings were beginning to decline, I decided that it needed to be opened. The fact that JohnC offered to send me one shows what a generous and fine person he is. The fact that the first one arrived broken in a totally destroyed styro shipper, and that he was able and willing to send a replacement shows what a uniquely fine trader John is. And that Herbjones supplied the make-up bottle for John says it all about him as well. All of the credits for the ratings from this bottle go to those two guys. And I think everyone agreed that this bottle had held up well. Fleeting white head over a clear gold. Wonderfully sweet, fruity aroma with warm nuts and honey. Not overly sweet, yet not bitter either, this one is lead by a nice citric fruitiness in the flavor. Smooth and easy drinking. Avery nice triple.

Draught at the Belgian Beer Fest. Pours a brilliant goldenrod color, deep and almost syrupy looking. Hints of bright orange and red peek through. Little to no head. Aroma of sweet yellow fruit esters (peaches, oranges, nectarines, apricots) with a lightly sweet yeast presence and a light note of vanilla or cream. Flavor is very sweet and candi flavored, with canned syrupy peaches appeal, low alcohol apparency and plenty of Belgian yeast activity. It’s very well done, and though I’m not a fan of the sweeter style of trippels (I like the perfumy, bitter, dry yeasty ones) this one was very good, very drinkable and did not thin out or shows problems from its age (2-3 years old now)

Thanks to TChrome for the trade. As if buying beer wasn't an enjoyable enough experience, doing it for a good cause makes it all the better! This is one of the more enjoyable Tripels I have had to boot. Pours a lightly cloudy and bright yellow-orange/apricot color with a medium thin white head. Thin and quick lacing. Aroma of citrus, banana and hops. Medium-bodied with a nice blend of citrus, pepper, coriander and apricot. The finish has a bit of alcohol kick to it, along with some fruit.

Cheers to Kimchee for getting this rarity! Pale, bright yellow. Fruity aroma (apricot, peach, pear) with marshmallow. Sweet palate is fruity (pear, peach), vibrant textures and flowery esters. Well-hidden alcohol. Slightly tart in the finish, with lemony notes.

Crystal clear golden colour with a thin white head. Aroma of coriander seed, curacao and strong sugars. Medium to full-bodied; Sweet flavourful-fruity (peaches, pears, apricots and grapes) with some normal curacao and coriander seed. Aftertaste was sweet and clean-fairly nice. Very good for the style and fairly nice from Stone (Which always is NOT the case!). I had this bottle at the Winter Party at Oakes' place in Toronto, Canada on 05-December-2003. Many thanks to KimChee for bringing up this beer-one of the highlights from the night! Even though I only had a few centilitres of this to sample, I did take my time and make it a one hour (or so) sampling!
