A long time ago (well, 2004), Pizza Port’s (Solana Beach, CA) Tomme Arthur and New Belgium’s Peter Bouckaert brewed an all Brettanomyces beer they called Mo’ Betta Bretta. In 2012, the two joined forces once again — this time at The Lost Abbey — to re-release this funky ale.
On the Imagination River…live some very curious Bullfrogs. Rumor has it they LOVE funky and wild beer. But it wasn’t always this way. Like most beer drinking frogs, they started out drinking mass produced beer. And for the most part, each was content drinking this beer. But then a new frog took up residence next door. He embraced funk and his inner wild child.
One day, while lounging on the lily pads, he broke out a special bottle of Mo Betta Bretta, a delicious blonde ale with a decidedly 100% wild fermentation carried out by Brettanomyces. Everything changed that day. Now when you get close to the reeds and listen, you can hear them croaking in unison…Mo Betta Bretta. And for that, we’re thankful these frogs have great taste in beer.

375 ml bottle bought through Brill & Co. Pours hazy golden with a rather small frothy offwhite head that quickly dissipates while leaving a small trace on the glass. Smell is funky with crackers, hay, white grapes, raisins, dry soil, leather and overripe tropical fruits. Taste is funky and tiny malty with crackers, hay, dry soil, old white bread, overripe grapes, overripe plums, barnyard, lemon zest, buttery wood and overripe tropical fruits. Mouthfeel is round, dry and light to medium bodied. Finish is tiny bitter and slightly funky with old white bread, hay, overripe white grapes, dry soil and hints of barnyard and overripe tropical fruits. A disappointment but still an OK beer. --- Beer merged from original tick of Mo' Betta Bretta on 29 Dec 2013 at 01:57 - Score: 6

Odense Beer & Ball Saturday - Real Madrid vs. Valladolid. Cloudy golden with a small white head. Yeasty aroma with some weak fruity and spicy notes, a bit like a boring, non-trappist tripel. Sweet yeasty and spicy flavour with a touch of funk. Quite disappointing for a Lost Abbey brett beer...

Bottle @ Beer & Ball Saturday, Odense. 13,000th Tasting. Pours hazy golden with a small off white head. Very mild funk, brett and fruit. Yeasty phenols. Too little brett.

Bottle shared at a tasting at Beer Market Jaffa. Cloudy golden-orange. Aroma is yeasty, fruity, a bit soapy, a bit floral. Sweetish yeasty flavor with fruity esters. Medium-bodied. Like a middle-of-the-road Belgian Ale.

375mL bottle dated 7/23/2012.Aroma is fairly fruit with moderate pear and red apple notes along with lighter notes of tropical fruit and pineapple. Light graininess present. Hint of barnyard funk.Pours a slightly cloudy pale gold with a moderately thick white head that is slightly soapy but had pretty good retention. Light lacing and no legs.Flavor is similar but with a lot more red apple cider character that immediately hits you. Lighter pear notes with only faint tropical fruit and cherry. Funk is fairly low and malt tastes a bit stale and honey-like. Low bitterness. Some lingering honey and red cider notes. Dry finish.Mouthfeel is medium to medium light bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and low alcohol warmth.Overall a good beer but not an amazing beer. Saints Devotion is a much better Brett beer. The cider notes are too strong and it seems a little under carbonated. Could use a lighter fruit character and fresher malt profile.

Sample at the Willoughby PBCCP tasting on 11/17/2013: This brew pours a hazy yellow-gold color with a medium off-white head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Small patches of lacing on the glass. Aroma of tropical fruit, malt and yeast. Medium-bodied with flavors of mildly tart fruit, earthy yeast and malt. The finish is fruity with a slightly funky yeast aftertaste. A little disappointing considering the caliber of the two breweries involved in this effort. Decent overall.

bottle from ølbutikken. cloudy yellow, smooth white head. clear flowery aroma, also quite bretty, quite dry, bretty dry but also clearly non-belgian aroma. Flavor is flowery, sort of lemongrassy, faint oranges, the sweetness works not so good with the faint bretty notes imo. Like a too-sweet saison, with too little yeasty spicy stuff going on. Lost abbey usually tastes a lot better than this.

From Ølbutikken shared at Ohtsuki. Bottle 6.3% musty, stale hay, like a hay loft with a cross breeze from a fruit orchard. Not getting any of the metallic qualities I usually associate with Brett. The taste is clean, bready with just a hint of sourness on the finish & a touch of lemon. Not that complex but great stuff.

Bottled, large sample. After pouring some of the sediment, it became hazy golden colored with a short slight off-white head. Aroma has slight pepper, hint of white wine, grapes, hint of grainy malt. Slight dry in taste, bit sweet, hint of caramel, quite spicy. Also has some fruitiness like white wine. There is some spice or spicyness I cant seem to name. Nice that it’s 100% Brett, but it tastes a bit like lots of belgian beers do. Nothing special in that.
