A long time ago (well, 2004), Pizza Port’s (Solana Beach, CA) Tomme Arthur and New Belgium’s Peter Bouckaert brewed an all Brettanomyces beer they called Mo’ Betta Bretta. In 2012, the two joined forces once again — this time at The Lost Abbey — to re-release this funky ale.
On the Imagination River…live some very curious Bullfrogs. Rumor has it they LOVE funky and wild beer. But it wasn’t always this way. Like most beer drinking frogs, they started out drinking mass produced beer. And for the most part, each was content drinking this beer. But then a new frog took up residence next door. He embraced funk and his inner wild child.
One day, while lounging on the lily pads, he broke out a special bottle of Mo Betta Bretta, a delicious blonde ale with a decidedly 100% wild fermentation carried out by Brettanomyces. Everything changed that day. Now when you get close to the reeds and listen, you can hear them croaking in unison…Mo Betta Bretta. And for that, we’re thankful these frogs have great taste in beer.

Bottle @ Christianssand Brygghus. Slightly hazy deep golden with a small white head. Both aroma and flavor is rather mild and subtle in this beer, but giving it some proper attention will reward. This is not a typical sour beer at all, more a decent Belgium ale with just a hint of Brett. The main flavor is sweet malt, it’s also fruity, moderate bitterness, some Belgium yeast, a bit spicy and then a hint of funk. Fine body and aftertaste in same direction of the rest of the beer. Smooth and well balanced, demand some extra attention maybe.

Bottle as shown. Pours a cloudy yellow with small frothy white head. The aroma is yeast, funk, and fruit. Medium mouthfeel with a strong funk and brett with light citrus and wheat. Hides alcohol well, very good wild ale from Lost Abbey.

Bottle at The Bottle Shop Canterbury. Hazy pale gold orange lasting white head. Stewed apple bit of malt touch of brett maybe. Decent Belgian ale. Not overly sour. Some sour green apple on the finish. Yes more wild than sour. Very drinkable. It’s a slightly sour slightly wild beer. Good drinkability in mouth, some almost too sour stewed green apple flavour in the mouth. Touch of hop on finish. Fine.

Sampled from a 12.7 oz brown corked bottle this beer poured a murky peach-orange color with a medium sized foamy-soapy orange-white head that left decent lacing. The aroma was musty, dusty a bit bretty with notes of bread dough, orange, lemon and a bit of pepper. The flavor was sweetish and tangy sugar, candied golden fruits, a bit of brett and must followed by bread dough and honey. Medium length tangy bread dough, orange and honey finish. Moderately full bodied. Excellent.

Bottle at home, 30/05/13, thanks to either Max Daddy or Jredmond my memory fades I brought so many beers home across the pond ! Pours a murky orange amber with a big white head that soon reduces to a good sized film. Nose is yeast, light brett, stagnant pond, dark fruits, light spice and a little soapy. Taste comprises a light layer of caramel, dark fruits, brett light, touch of yeast, lemon rind, sugars, orange peel. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, light tarteness in the finish. Ok and drinkable but not enough brett and not sour enough, sour for beginners perhaps but not one I’d go back to. Lacks depth, funk and complexity.

355 ml corked bottle, kindly shared by our beerpal Ole Anders. Hazy golden colour, low head. Nice brettanomyces aroma, farmhouse and hints of wood, but not extreme. The flavour is a bit dull, but not unpleasant. Modest brett notes throughout, minimal bitterness.

Flaske hos Ole Anders mai-13: kveldens første sour ale, og dette går riktig bra. Mild aroma og snill surhet. Denne kan jeg fint leve med.
