Bottle thanks to Hunter. Pours an orange gold with small white head that lasts. The aroma is strong rhubarb, funk, floral, oak. Slick body, similar flavors to nose, nice tartness, enjoyed this.

The 2021 edition of this rhubarb lambic by one of the most coveted (and hyped) ‘home lambic blenders’ of the moment – thanks Johan Lamarcq for sharing at Dijleschuimers Winters Bierfestival. No head whatsoever, clear deep and warm, orangey- and rosy-tinged ‘old golden’ robe. Aroma of stewed rhubarb, unripe green plum but also ripe sweet nectarine (probably the rhubarb again), sweet sherry to even madeira, lemon zest, hints of wood and margarine and even something subtly and fascinatingly smoky – in all, a complex and rich nose with surprising elements I did not see coming from a rhubarb lambic. Lemony and lactic acids mingle with oxalic acid from the rhubarb in the mouth, but the rhubarb also adds a touch of sweetness and fruitiness; still, oxalic acid and unripe stonefruit-like sourness and astringency prevail, through a supple cereally core buried under not just ongoing rhubarb, but also increasing yoghurty lactic tartness and gentle tannic woodiness. Lemon, sour plum and the omnipresent ‘red’ rhubarb stems rule the finish, but there is an unexpected sherry-like effect too, adding vinosity and complexity – even a touch of sweetness under all that tartness, almost like white grape or white peach, keeps things colourful and interesting till the last drop. This is, without a doubt, a stunningly beautiful, complex and majestic lambic – even after several of Bofkont’s products, I was still amazed at what has been achieved here. In this case I can easily say that it is worth the hype, in spite of my natural aversion to hypes…

Gott oavsett.
