When William McEwan founded his brewery at Fountainbridge in Edinburgh in 1856, this 80/- (‘eighty shilling’) was one of the first beers he produced. It was the beer of choice for McEwan’s brewery workers and at one time the local pub sold almost nothing else! Its classic full flavour is still much loved at home and abroad.
This traditional Scottish premium ale is also known as ‘Heavy’ and when it comes to taste it certainly packs a powerful punch.

Festival pint draft at the Waterloo Bar, Edinburgh, Scotland. Cask pour. Jumping in here to dodge the rain. It pours a clear dark amber color with a small beige head and excellent retention. Quasi nitro pour. No aroma at all. Tastes kind of like an ESB, but a little darker and maltier. Great texture. Very creamy. Medium body and low carbonation. Very low bitterness. Great texture but somewhat generic flavor.

Tap. Slight malty aroma. Light amber color. The barmaid has some trouble pouring this beer. Rather sweet and sticky with some mango fruit. Only very slight bitter aftertaste. A bit bland and fizzy with a somewhat watery aftertaste.

Keg at the Laurieston, Glasgow. Light to mid brown with a massive cream-coloured head. Light chocolate malt notes on the nose with some Caramello. Pleasant if unengaging bittersweet taste. A touch of overripe citrus in the aftertaste. Not my cup of tea but I’ve had worse.
