A Best Bitter brewed in a traditional Sussex style using extra pale Concerto, Crystal and Chocolate malts with East Kent Goldings hops. Typical of Dark Star ales, the Best Bitter relies on the heavy-handed addition of aromatic hops late in the boil.

Handpull cask at the Prince Albert, Ely. Somewhat dark brown but translucent. Slightly off-putting sulphur tinge to the aroma, but it’s moistened with a strong note of berries. Sweet and malty at first, drawing to a bitter finish. Bitter cooking chocolate on the aftertaste. Pretty good although not one of my favourites from Dark Star.

Cask gravity at the Watford beer fest 2015. Mid amber coloured pour with a small off white head. Aroma is dirty nutty malts, light raisin, some English yeast esters, hint if caramel. Flavour is composed of light nutty caramel, dried fruits, cakey. Palate is semi sweet, lowish carbonation, bit dull.

Slightly hazy amber. Biscuity amber malt character. Mellow hop - the least hoppy Dark Star I’ve had probably. Good character w subtle earthiness. Might benefit from a more expressive yeast but it’s a nice beer.
