Each fall, our brewhouse looks more like a greenhouse as thousands of pounds of wet hop cones arrive within hours of being picked by some of our favorite local hop growers. Acting quickly, we then load up these wet hops into what will become Harvest Ale – an impossibly aromatic and bright IPA bursting with fresh pine, melon and citrus notes. Our ode to the beauty that is the wet, American hop.

Bottle from Schroppfy, thanks! Blonde, hazy. Melon, grapefruit and pineapple in the strong aroma. Firm grassy hopbitter flavor with melon and pineapple. The grassy hopbitternes and the fruit coincide well. Well made beer.

Bottle pour into shaker pint glass. Appearance is clear, light brown/dark yellow, no sparkle, 1/2-finger width off-white head, foamy/fizzy, fair retention and no lacing. Aroma is west coast danky citrus bitter, with milder herb on the cannabis side, and candied sugar. Taste is dank, resiny herbal bitter with sweet citrus and sugary balance. Palate is light-to-medium bodied with smooth, thin texture, soft carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, not bad, but was hoping for wet hop juicy citrus/fruit vs. strong danky bitter. I guess it was just the wrong wet hop.

Bottle from Boise Co-op. Hazy orange golden, small bubbly head. Aroma is fruity, hoppy, hint of pine. Hops move to the front in the taste, citrus lingering behind. A bit of sticky bitterness, orange peel.

A bring-home 12 oz bottle obtained at Total Wine on a March Madness trip to Las Vegas last week. Generally Founders does me right so I bought without a second thought. Crack the bottle open and tilt into my ABGB tulip glass, Here comes an opaque, darkish orange body topped by a slender, almost pure white head. The scent, some light fruit, wheat, kinda sweet smelling, where is this going? The taste will say. Totally different than the nose I estimate. A distinct hop presence, pine, grain, bit-o-honey. Ending with a fair bitterness but far from a bomb. Not bad, not great. It just is.

12 oz bottle, thanks brenn79. Aroma is piney, grapefruit peel, floral, tropical fruit. Pours slightly hazy orange with a one finger off white head with good retention. Taste is mid level bitter and candy sweet with flavors of tropical fruit, pine. Aroma is better than flavor, but this is still pretty good.

Gave this a 4.3 nine years ago. Times change, palates change, IPAs evolve...Not that Founders Harvest is bad, and I'm sure it did absolutely blow me away when I first tried it in 2008. Now, though, it's a pretty straightforward pre-Craft Boom IPA, citric and bitter but not nearly as aromatic and aggressive as the hop bombs of today, more piney and herbal than fruit forward. (I'm assuming the beer's stayed the same post-San Miguel buyout, but, judging by the erratic quality of the brewery's current offerings, it's entirely possible 2008 Harvest was a different beast altogether.) I enjoy the old-school bitterness, the huge pine-resin back end that lingers forever on the palate, but that's the main thing Harvest brings to the table. Otherwise, it's a well-made, somewhat dull IPA.

Bottle from Maekchu. Thanks a lot. Nose is grapefuit, biscuit malt, crackers, lemon, and a bit of pineapple. Cloudy golden orange with a low, rocky head. Sweet, malty, esters, citrus. Lots of orange. Good balance. Crisp.
