Wet-Hopped Ale

Each fall, our brewhouse looks more like a greenhouse as thousands of pounds of wet hop cones arrive within hours of being picked by some of our favorite local hop growers. Acting quickly, we then load up these wet hops into what will become Harvest Ale – an impossibly aromatic and bright IPA bursting with fresh pine, melon and citrus notes. Our ode to the beauty that is the wet, American hop.

Fresh on tap at Beer Baron. It pours a clear pale gold color with a white head. The aroma is nice and sweet with tropical fruit, pineapple, mango and a hint of grapefruit. The flavor is low in bitterness with a good amount of light toffee/toasted malt presence and floral, citrus and tropical fruity hops. Hint of cookie in the finish. Light bodied and clean. Good.

Growler from Joe Canal’s in Iselin, NJ. Brassy gold color topped by a moderate frothy beige head that yields nice lace. Fresh citrus hop nose is complex and big. First sip is bittersweet with a toasty caramel maltiness that morphs to the wonderfully complex hoppy hoe down. Juicy, fruity and citrusy with notes of grass and pine. Deliciously and arduously balanced to make this a real sensory pleasure for the tastebuds. A must have.

Pours a clear golden-yellow, with thin head and lots of effervescence. Strong floral-hop aroma, with some hints of citrus and tropical fruit. Flavor is quite bitter, but very smooth, with a ton of pine-hop bite. Some citrus notes as well. Pretty good stuff.

Draught at Sunset Grill, 10/19/15.
Very clear, lightly carbonated blonde liquid with a small, moderately-retained white head.
Light cascade-like notes in the nose; orange rind, lemon, bit of grapefruit and perhaps a touch of mango. Some crackery, and white dough maltiness, with a very clean feel to it and maybe a touch of light resin. No alcohol, but rather low on aroma strength.
Peanut butter, peach, orange and toffee in the flavor. I don’t know, but I’ve got to guess they had Purple Monkey Dishwasher on this line. It sucks, because my god damned IPA tastes like peanut butter. For a while, I wouldn’t rate these beers, but fuck it, if a brewery gets mad at someone rating their beer in poor condition, they can go ahead and contact the bar who can’t clean their damned lines. Sure, this is more an indictment of Sunset, which I’ve indicted my entire rating career (to no avail), but who knows, maybe enough people will figure out that this place dosent clean their lines and finally a distributor or brewery rep will say something (unlikely, I know). Anyways, I’ll try this beer again at a later point and rerate it. In the meantime, it seems pretty mild and drinkable, if a bit underwhelming in the hop department.
