This stout has taken every inch of flavour from the barrels and then some. For the latest in the Abstrakt family – a lineage that celebrates experimentation at every turn – we have created a beer that celebrates in twelve (12) malts. As you can imagine, a dozen different malts produce a huge imperial stout and the combination of US and European hops are there to complement it; added only to the boil this latest Abstrakt is a champion of grain and ageing.

The aroma gives this away immediately, with edges of coffee, dark chocolate, toffee, forest fruits, and a vanilla sweetness mingling with a rye spiciness from the wood. We have also added coffee, honey, demerara sugar and milk sugars to the brewsheet – just to create even more layers of flavour. AB:27 is thick, smooth and flows into a warming finale that is unlike anything we have released before. But then that is why we have Abstrakt.

Thick chocolate fudge, some raisin on the nose from the barrels. Not the best of the AB, but nothing to shake a stick at...

Keg at Brewdog Cowgate. Pours black with very little in the way of a head. Boozy bourbon aromas, spicy, some chocolate. Taste is more of the same. Bourbon and wood dominate. Thin.

Keg at BrewDog Dalston - London. Shared with Andy! Pours oily black with a creamy tan head. Solid, well rounded impy, with lots of deep chocolate, dried dark fruits, light ashy roast bitterness. Full bodied and chewy, with fine carbonation. Warming finish, lots of baking cocoa. Great stuff.

Keg at BrewDog Leicester. Purplish brown and opaque. No head. Aroma of bourbon, hot fudge, rubber. Taste is sweeter than I envisaged, but there is a sour bourbon comeback nearer the finish. Medium ro heavy carbonation. Maybe an AB by numbers (if you'll pardon the pun) but still complex and enjoyable.
