When introspection fails, it’s time to look outward for inspiration, perhaps Northward! One of the people who inspired me this past year is my friend Gabe Fletcher, of Anchorage Brewing Co. We brewed this biére together. I hope it inspires you. Northward!

750 ml bottle, Cardinal Pub & Bar, Stavanger. ABV is
7%. Oak barrel aged and bottle conditioned. Brewed with grapefruit peel, juice and peppercorns. Golden colour, large white head. Aroma of farmhouse kitchen, oaked apple cider and apple cider vinegar, white wine vinegar, citrus and green peppercorns. The flavour is distinctly peppery and oaky, moderately sour (not as much as some other JP beers), notes of grapefruit and oaked cider. Pepper and fairly bitter hops in the finish. Interesting beer.

Unlike the Anchorage bottle I had last Summer, this bottle does not have a date on it. However, after initial smell and taste, nothing seemed off so here’s the rest.
This was poured into a snifter.
The appearance was a hazy burnt orange color with a slim white finger’s worth of foamy white head that dissipated and left a nice lacing glossing around the sides of the glass.
The smell had a big sweet sticky citrus to a delicate grapefruit goodness. Floral and spicy peppercorns dance underneath my nose as well.
The taste combined all of the previously mentioned elements to sweeten and enliven the floral spicy notes wildly underneath and over my tongue. There’s a big spicy citrus aftertaste and a dry citrus finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a fairly decent sipping to sessionable quality about it. Nice spice rolls over my tongue.
Overall, I say this was a pretty good sour/wild ale that I could have again. It’s nice that it showed up in Alaska. Thank you Shelton Brothers/Jolly Pumpkin for giving up your dead.

75 cl bottle @ tiong
Aroma has nice, funky bretta tones, some grapefruit and orange. Flavour has grapefruit, baking stuff, some orange juice and some minerals. Also some salty notes typical to the brewery. Refreshing and nice bretta-beer, JP sure knows how this style is done correctly.

Bottle from De Molen Beer Shop, at home. Cloudy dark golden with a lasting white head. Big funky and fruity aroma, hitting you from pretty much when the bottle is opened. Pineapple, grapefruit, leather and old wood. Sour fruit candy and a little bit of urinal blocks. Very dry and slightly tart fruity flavour with citrus hops and brett funk with a hoppy, bitter finish. Tasty, juicy and quenching
