XXIV. 24 years after Black Butte Porter’s debut, our potent, layered, imperial tribute returns. As usual, it’s a jazz riff, guided by the brewer’s muse and the lure of exotic ingredients. Artisanal dark chocolate nibs. Daglet dates. Mission figs. It may, possibly, hopefully, be the best edition yet. But, as it should be, you’ll be the judge of that.

Bomber shared at a tasting, 3/30/15. Clear dark red, thin fizzy tan head. Good retention. Aroma of sugared dates, cinnamon, roasted malt, chocolate. The taste is roasted malt, caramel, vanilla, dark fruits, dates. Medium bodied, low carbonation, boozy.

[2/27/15] Draught at Deschutes Brewery & Public House in Portland. Black with a nice tan head. Aroma is a bit spicy, with lots of dates and some chocolate. Sweet flavor with dark fruits, chocolate, and a spicy and slightly alcoholic finish. Quite full-bodied.

This was the big beer stout that I was expecting. Has a hint of autolysis, old hops, bitter. Chocolate syrup. Bitter malts in the flavor. More chocolate syrup in flavor again. Maybe I get some light spices coming out. After this one I stopped rating, they were way more similar than different.

From Let’s Pour R.I.P. Black pour with a fleeting tan head. Aroma of molasses and cocoa. The flavor is slightly sweet with bitter roast malts balancing out the sweetness. Smooth cocoa throughout. Nice sipper.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle. Aroma is chocolate forward with a background roast and faint smokiness. Just a hint of peat with moderate spice character. Moderate dark fruit and fig character with some raisin. Medium light alcohol spice and light oak character. Spice character seems to be cinnamon, anise and clove. Pours black with a small, thick mocha head that recedes to a small wisp of foam in the center of the glass. No lacing and moderately long, viscous legs. Flavor is similar to the aroma with sweet, rich chocolate upfront. Some medium light roast, faint smoke and light tobacco follow along with some moderate fruit notes, mostly fig but also prune and raisin. A light leather character. Spice comes through in the finish with lingering chocolate, roast and and leather. Spice seems to be cinnamon, clove and anise like in the aroma. Some faint oak notes and medium light alcohol spice. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied and slightly oily with medium low carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, a nice beer but the finish doesn’t quite work for me. The spice character doesn’t work with the alcohol and lingering roast character. Nice fruit notes.

Bottle, massive thanks to Endo - king of PDX for gifting me this one, split with Simon at 20MR 03/08/14. Mid black with a well appointed tan covering that just sits and watches and never wains, perfect retention - 5/5! Nose is malt forward, cocoa powder, liqourice, light mineral and spice, dark toffee. Taste is a full on chocolate malt shake, chocolate maltesers, faint liqourice, dark fruit vibes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, smooth and massaging on the palate. Superb imperial porter.

22 oz. bottle. Shared by Phatdog1. Date on label reads best after 7/23/2013. If you sampled this before that, you served this brew an in justice. Deep black with real thin tan head. No lace. Nose is lighter than the bold flavor. Dark fruit and chocolate. The flavor shows anise, burnt malts, dark chocolate, figs, burnt sugar. I also get traces of cinnamon. The other 4 people drinking thought I was off on that but… some type of sweet spice. Even some sort of bitterness to help off-set all the sweetness. Medium-full bodied and silky smooth texture. Very nice.
