Michael Robinson’s Old Ben Ale is a malty English-style brew boasting notes of dried fruit, nut, and caramel. A slight bitterness balances the combination of five malts in this full bodied beer. Light brown with reddish highlights and good clarity, the ingredients of this English-style brew are all American with the exception of the yeast which is distinctively English. Created to enjoy on cold nights or as an after dinner treat, Mike’s Old Ale is 9% alcohol by volume, about twice that of the average beer. An experienced homebrewer, Mike was recognized as a finalist in the 2008 Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest, as well as in the 2007 Samuel Adams® Patriot Homebrew Contest.

Bottle. Ruby-amber beer with a dark cream colored head. malt and dried fruit aroma with plums. Plum and fig flavor with light caramel and malt. Medium-plus bodied. Plum and fig lingers with light caramel and light earth. A bit like a Dubbel with American yeast.

12oz bottle. Great peckerwood label art (no offense, Ben). Ruby red-brown with a small beige head. Raisiny sweet aroma. Wow. This is a pretty decent beer. Mellow caramel and toffee tones, big sweetness, but somehow keeps a very soft body. Pretty darn drinkable, and true to style to boot. Toasty burnt raisin, drenched in caramel. The lack of big time hops, not to say there isn’t some good balance, works well with this, allowing the malts to really shine. Creamy, mellow body for such a monster. Well done.

We really need to make a distinction between traditional british old ales and these American versions, which are really more like barleywines - anyway, this one pours a clear red with a fairly substantial head for the abv - a lot of prune, raisin and fig in the nose, as well as a touch of treacle and buttered toast - appropriate treacle and caramel sweetness, as well as an appropriate touch of buttery character in the flavor - warming alcohol - quite a bit of raisin and fig - a bit of peppery hops on the tail end compliment the alcohol heat - could use a touch more depth, but fairly well put together.

12 ounce bottle from Whole Foods Glen Allen, VA, on 5/5/10. Hmm, shouldn’t I be drinking some crappy Mexican lager right now? Pish on that! This pours a clear dark strawberry red color with a large creamy tan head. Good head retention and lacing. Aroma of toffee, caramel, apple and raisins. The taste is leafy hops, raisins, toffee and a bit of citrus. Medium bodied. Straightforward, but good, old ale.

The pour is clear deep amber in color, with a tall, tight, off-white head. Complex aroma of caramel/molasses and dark dried fruit. The flavor is sweet and complex following the aroma.

Bottle from the Natomas BevMo. Pours a dark ruddy copper with a foamy 3 finger off-white head. Aroma is very caramel. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Body thins as carb leaves. Flavor is rather sweet. Not sticky tho. First cuz to a barley wine. Malty, fruity and hoppy enough to keep it from being a poor taster. Nice and different ale.

12oz bottle pours clear amber with copper hues and thin off white head. The aroma is nice and pungent with ample amounts of prunes, plums and sugar stewed raisin sweetness mixing with molasses, some toffee and a touch of boozy heat. The taste is sweet and rich with prunes, sweet raisins, some fig, sweet malts and a caramel molasses mixture. A dandy old ale that is only going to get better with age.

Toffee, fig, and malt nose, with hints of leather. Clear copper, medium yellow head. The flavor is of sweet malt and juniper berries. Gin-like finish with alcohol evident. Unique, but not appealing to me.
