Michael Robinson’s Old Ben Ale is a malty English-style brew boasting notes of dried fruit, nut, and caramel. A slight bitterness balances the combination of five malts in this full bodied beer. Light brown with reddish highlights and good clarity, the ingredients of this English-style brew are all American with the exception of the yeast which is distinctively English. Created to enjoy on cold nights or as an after dinner treat, Mike’s Old Ale is 9% alcohol by volume, about twice that of the average beer. An experienced homebrewer, Mike was recognized as a finalist in the 2008 Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest, as well as in the 2007 Samuel Adams® Patriot Homebrew Contest.

Hazy brown beer, small pale tan head. Smooth palate, semi dry and with a little fine carbonation. Malt, bubblegum. Trace of citrus. Semi dry finish. Fine.

I’ve been sitting on this for a while, I’m surprised I haven’t already reviewed it. Served at room temperature it pours a medium copper color with a huge milky white head that takes forever to retreat and sticks lots of lace on the way down. Lots of dark sugar and sweet dark fruits fill the aroma. There’s a hint of sherry and a touch of alcohol, but they meld nicely. The flavor is sweet and malty with a solid warming alcohol that I can trace as it flows southward. Lots of sweet dark sugars with light citrus and darker dried fruits in the flavor. Almost like a marmalade thing going on too. Medium to thick body with a moderate to high level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy mouthfeel. Nice beer, but a bit sweet and still a bit hot which is odd.

12oz Bottle Thanks to JohnGalt1. Pours out a amber topped with a small tan head. Aroma of fruit, light hops, brown sugar, and a nice caramel malt. Taste is pit fruit, earthy, caramel, and some of the brown sugar picked up in the aroma. A taste and sweet Old Ale.

bottle - Pours clear amber with a light tan head. It smells of caramel malt and raisins and tastes of sweet caramel malt and a little dark fruit. It’s full bodied and the 9% abv is pretty much completely buried. Good brew.

Hazy, chunky ruby-tinted amber coloured body with a copper glow and a very thin tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, pit fruits, prunes, raisins, whiskey, alcohol and quite a bit of spice. Medium to Full-bodied; Pungent, potent malt flavour with a dose of caramel, some light earth and a bit of raisins. Aftertaste shows some light smoke and leather, a lot of alcohol and a ton of malt. Overall, a fairly well-done old, with more emphasis on sugars than most from the style, but the good basementy, musty malt definitely exist in this one. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle from the sampler six pack, purchased at Ye Olde Spirit Shop in Frederick, Maryland on 29-July-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 23-January-2011.

I picked this up at Archer Liquors in Chicago, IL; enjoyed while lounging around the house watching week 8 football. Appearance is a somewhat clear dark amber with a thin white head. Aroma somewhat faint, slightly fruity and sweet with a malt backing. Taste consisting of caramel and alcohol with a hint of fruit, carbonation is a little more than what I was expecting, definitely a little malty. Not bad.

NBD, Ny,NY ($10.50): Pours a beige head that quickly disappears over a slightly hazy brown body. The aroma is fruity and boozy, with a backbone of caramel malts. Taste itself is on the sweet side, just shy of being cloying. There are definite booze notes throughout. Kind of reminds me of some of the flavors that you find in a quadruple. The texture is a little syrpuy, but not too much either. An interesting beer and a good value for a style that typically is available only in bombers or 750ml bottles.

Solid beer. Dark brown and very tall head that slowly fades to lace the glass. Caramel and alcohol in the aroma. Flavor is sweet, tons of malt, and of course no hop character, which is fine. I do not feel the high alcohol. Becomes a little cloying near the end.

12 oz bottle from Country Club Liquors. Nose is toffee, bubblegum, nuttiness, and a hint of woody vanilla.Clear light brown with a medium beige head. Flavor is a hint of bitterness, sweet caramel and toffee, and some background toasted nuts. Adam comes before Ben aphabetically and it will in my old ale ratings also!

For near macro, sammy keeps pumpen those micros out. Take for example this brew in a really nasty volatile near rude wine awakening. Nice beer pour, appears clear and viscous darker pale yellow. No gunk on the bottom of this gnarly bottle. Smell is sweet candy. Wew, 1st taste is a big alky slam. Medicine narcotic punch that is to be reckonned with. Up the snoot and down the hatch. Big rude and nearly blasty. Perhaps this is right up your palate big beer lover. Nasty nestling nettles burning. Big bitter medicine lingering nearly oily mouth coating finish. Yes, this tastes nearly as old as the beers I bought at winerak.
