Michael Robinson’s Old Ben Ale is a malty English-style brew boasting notes of dried fruit, nut, and caramel. A slight bitterness balances the combination of five malts in this full bodied beer. Light brown with reddish highlights and good clarity, the ingredients of this English-style brew are all American with the exception of the yeast which is distinctively English. Created to enjoy on cold nights or as an after dinner treat, Mike’s Old Ale is 9% alcohol by volume, about twice that of the average beer. An experienced homebrewer, Mike was recognized as a finalist in the 2008 Samuel Adams LongShot American Homebrew Contest, as well as in the 2007 Samuel Adams® Patriot Homebrew Contest.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a red-caramel color with a small beige head that faded quickly. The aroma was sour cherries, raisins and molasses. The flavor was a nicely complex mix of ripe cherries, molasses, sugar, nutty malts, raisins, honey and brown sugar. The finish was long with nut, honey and cherries. Full bodied & sweet - just as I like them. Excellent.

Pours clear amber into a Sam glass. Off-white micro head with excellent retention recedes to skim surface. Tropical fruit and caramel aromas. Sweet pineapple and caramel upfront turning slightly bitter in the lasting vanilla burn finish.

Bottle. A pretty darn good beer. Pours clear, an amber ruby, with a medium, orange-beige cap. Super malty aroma, some licorice, dark fruits such as fig, plum, raising and especially prune. Extremely sweet with more dark fruits in the flavor. Also notes of caramel, maple syrup, and toffee. Alcohol is there, but only serves to enhance the depth of character and give some nice warmth to the medium body. Average carbonation. FInishes sweet and syrupy, only mild hints of bitterness. Really nice - and perhaps better than some of the other Sam Adams beers I have tried before.

Clear reddish brown pour. Nose is candied malt. Taste is candy, brown sugar and molasses. Tasty drink. Lost some points for appearance and lower-bodied mouth feel. Other than that, good beer.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber with a medium frothy beige head that leaves good sticky lacing. The aroma is a bready malt with raisin and caramel. Medium mouthfeel with a fruity malt with caramel and a nice dry finish. Hides the alcohol extremely well, a very good old ale.

12 oz bottle. Pours amber with an off-white head. Medium sweet aroma of dark fruits and red fruits. Flavor has dark fruit and toffee with an earthy nuttiness, caramel, and bread. Rather sweet, with some alcohol in the finish. Solid, though a touch too much sweetness and alcohol flavor.

12oz bottle. Pours a moderately dark, almost no head to speak of. Aroma is pretty mellow, tinge of malts and hops. Flavor is much fuller than the aroma. Malty, touch of hops. Alcohol is pretty subdued. I enjoyed it.

Pour is a dark amber with a large white head. Aroma is nice. Lots of caramel, nuts, sugar and some alcohol. Flavor is equally nice with some brown sugar and caramel. Leaves a nice cherry flavor on the tounge as this goes down. A worthy effort.

Bottle thanks to Mora2000. Pours with a hazy orange body and an off-white head. Aroma of caramel, bread, alcohol, vanilla and bananas foster. Taste is caramel, vanilla and burnt flan. Creamy carbonation. Decently solid.
