Perhaps no country embraces the use of fruit in beers more so than Belgium. Numerous traditional as well as regional specialty ales are infused with every sort of fruit imaginable. In this way, the flavor of the fruit becomes especially prominent.
Red Poppy Ale is a veritable celebration of Sour Cherries in an explosion of aromas and tastes. Brewed from a brown ale base and aged in our oak barrels for over 12 months, this beer is not for the faint of heart.
The Golden Poppy is the state flower of California and the Red Poppy is found in Flanders Fields where our inspiration for this beer comes from. This beer is 6.5% ABV and is available in 375 ml bottles and on draft at inspired locations.

On keg at Brewdog, Bristol. Pours deep cherry red with a fizzy pink head. Nose is light vinegar, sour cherries & woody oak. Taste is an explosion of spritzy sour cherries, oak & vanilla. Tart but not super sour. Immensely smooth, barrel ageing at it’s finest. Medium body, long dryish finish. Wonderful, amazing, gorgeous.

Bottle from North Bar, Leeds. Pours unclear red/brown with almost no head. Aroma of sour fruits, cherry, strawberry, sawdust, salted aramel and flowers. Has a light sweetness, towards heavy sourness, and a light salty edge. Towards medium body, watery texture, average to soft carbonation. Very good.

(375ml bottle from boxbeers.dk) Pours a slightly hazy ruby-brown with a quite large cream head that fades slowly leaving lace. Aroma of quite sour cherries, lots of wood, red wine vinegar, cherry pits, horseblanket Brett, lemon, spicebox, light caramel malt sweetness. Flavour of tart cherry, lemon, quite strongly woody, tangy astringent quality, some dusty yeast, light caramel sweetness, soft spice notes, maybe a touch of hard cheese. Finish is dry, low lingering fruity tartness, lots of oak. Light to medium bodied with smooth soft carbonation. The overall feeling does belie the relatively low ABV, but with that under consideration it’s a quite drinkable sour red.

Keg at Ratebeer Best Beer Festival. 31/01/2016. A murky brown / onion skin coloured pour with a loose white head. Aroma is tangy sour, lemon, horsey funk, sweet and sour with woody notes. Flavour is composed of brown sugars, tangy sour, cinamon spices, biscuity malts, dusty musty sourness. Palate is dry and tangy, moderate carbonation, approachable sourness. Good.

Bottle. Pours cloudy dark amber. Aroma is oak barrel, some wine, light cherry. Body is light, tart and sour. Fizzy carbonation to round of the super refreshing experience of this sour. Still fruity, being light but not lacking taste. Delightful!
