When we opened back in 1991 this was our first beer. We created this recipe while brewing with our mentor Pierre in his friend's garage in Montreal. We wanted to develop a beer that was smooth and easy-drinking, yet still retained an assertive body to set it apart. The result was a beer with nice caramel tones and a balance of the malt and hop profiles. Over time we have refined the ingredients to achieve what we feel is a perfectly balanced session brew.

Location: 12 oz bottle from Chevy Chase, at least I'm pretty sure that is where I got it, the memory isn't working as well as it use to, 3/12/10

Aroma: Nutty nose, there is toast, roasted malts, mild coco, fruity, and floral notes
Appearance: Dark mahogany color with a thin, fizzy beige head, and a bit of lace
Flavor: Flavor is somewhat sweet and nutty, floral notes, almost no hop presence at all
Palate: The carbonation on this one is soft, almost flat, it is medium bodied, and somewhat creamy
Overall Impression: A decent brown ale overall, not great, but it has some nice flavors to it. More along the lines of solid then being anywhere near spectacular, but it makes for a pretty sessionable brew.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Dark amber color with a quickly gone whiteish head. Aroma of caramel/malt. Medium body with lightly fizzy carbonation. Flavor is mild roast caramel with a bit of light hop. It’s really tasty. Finishes less than dry, but tasty.

12 ounce bottle from Wine Warehouse in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a dark ruby color with a small head. The aroma is odd, with maybe some infection notes... tart, nutty and with a bandaid note. Taste is caramel, nuts, toffee and that bandaid thing. Medium bodied.

Bottle. Pours a reddish brown with a big head that doesn’t let me get more than about half of the bottle into a pint glass. Aromas have a bit of funkiness to them and leaves me wondering about infection. Flavor has a bit of earthy malt, acidic peat and maybe some nut to it... Finishes off with a bit of a sour edge that is a nice touch.

Pours mahogany into a shaker. Offwhite head with good retention leaves sheet lacing as it slowly recedes. Smoked caramel aromas. Sweet smoked malt upfront becoming sweet and thin and onto a sour finish.

Bottle. Dark pour. Aroma is roasted with a nice touch of malts. Flavor was a little, eh. Not bad, but nothing spectacular. I have to admit that it felt like it was really fresh, which for me is usually a plus, so I was happy with this one.
