Samuel Adams Rustic Saison is an incredibly complex yet refreshing beer in the classic style of Belgian farmhouse ales. These blonde ales were traditionally brewed to quench the thirst of farmers throughout the summer months. The unique character of our brew comes from its Belgian yeast that imparts floral, fruity, and spicy flavors. These are layered with a slight earthiness and a citrusy, herbal hop character for a bright and satisfying summer brew.

Bottle from mixed pack at Nugget Market in Woodland, CA. Pours a light orange tinged gold with a creamy/foamy white head. Aroma is earthy and fruity with hints of spice. Med body. Flavor is initially citrus/fruit, then some amount of earthiness arrives, and it finished mildly spicey in combo with the foregoing. Nice. Pleasant. Not as intense as French/Belgians, but very nice.

Bottle from Summer pack. Bright yellow color in the standard Sam Adams glass, short foam head. Has grains of paradise in the nose, along with other spices and a bit of bubble-gum ester. For a mass market version of a saison, it’s nicely complex. Taste is the fruitiness of a warm ale ferment. Cardamon, a hint of cinnamon. Light Belgian pils malt with a bit of Ritz cracker. A little heavier than the average summer beer, but with a lot more character. Hops are just within balance, not too distinguished in themselves. A bit busy for a hot weather beer, but I’d rather have one of these than any five watery kölsches.

12oz bottle-pours a white head with yellow color. Aroma is light malt-bready, yeast, floral/herbal. Taste is light malt-bready, wood/grain, floral/herbal hop bite. Drying. Plenty of effervescence.

Part of the summer mix pack. Pours a clear golden yellow color with a thinnish bubbly white head that dissipates quickly but leaves some sticky lace. Smell is bread and grainy with some light pomme fruit notes. Lightly spicy with notes of wheat and yeast. Taste is sweet and bready malt with a touch of honey. Bits of green apple and pear appear quickly but are beaten down by a spicy earthy overtone. Leaves a spicy almost astringent flavor in its wake. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation and a sweet sugary water type mouthfeel. I can see this light refreshing brew drinking well in the summer sun, but frankly it is kind of boring.

From a bottle this stuff pours like a pale lager, appears filtered and it has plenty of streams of co2 going on. Nice thin unfading white head. Smell is fresh and perhaps a little pepper among the yeast olfactory. Very nice mild beer initial impressions, no sign of rude alky at all and I like that. An easy brew to like but it doesn’t have much of that farmy or slightly tart character which I asocsiate with most good saisons. After a while, there is this ever so slight mild bitter personality that lands on the palate. Goodly amount of co2 fer sure. Ok overall but that mild bitterness is now growing to a medium bite near the end of the session.

Draft. Poured a golden color with a medium sized foamy head. Aroma was spices, earthy hops, touch of citrus, small notes of yeast. Malts, yeast, citrus. Not terrible. It’s pretty good.

Long ago, in a Galaxy, Far Far away... I used to really like Sam Adams. Draft. The aroma is bread and a light mild spiciness. The flavor is spicy with a mild orange peel and clove. Flavor is honey, light spice and odd yeast flavors. To much carbonation. Thin body. Finishes somewhat dry. Basically, this is the weakest saison I’ve ever had. They really screwed this up.

Sampled on draft at Smokin’ Joe’s in Pittsburgh this beer poured a very pale yellow-gold color with a medium sized fluffy white head that left a touch of lacing. The aroma was Sweettart candied and table sugar. The flavor was tart lemon, faint pepper and some banana. The finish was medium length, dryish and had lemon and banana lingering. Light bodied. Ok.

12 oz bottle. Pours clear golden with a white head. Yeast-dominated aroma with bubble gum, clove, cotton candy. Flavor is fairly dry, with the yeasty bubble gum, banana, green apple, herbal flavors. Just a decent beer, a bit heavy on herbal flavor.
