Part of an amazing Newport Storm vertical at RBSG Grand Tasting. Pours mahogany. Nose/taste of oxidized sherry, black cherry and bread. Some toffee and caramel. No longer an imperial pils that’s for sure.

Blue bomber from Alldaydrinker; Nose is berries, yeast, toffee, brown sugar, and some barleywine-like aged odors; clear red- amber with a very small off-white head, the bottle gave a little poof of gas when opened; flavor is dark fruit, brown sugar, mild sweetness, and alcohol warmth; finish is alcohol with a little sweetness. Tastes like a cross between a very good barleywine and an excellent European Strong Lager!

Big thanks to matta for sharing this vintage ale. Pours hazy copper with weak off white head. The aroma is very barleywine like with figs and prunes mixed with a load of caramel candy, toffee, brown sugar and a hint of honey. There is a good sense of alcohol too but certainly in line with a brew carrying this high of an ABV. The taste begins very barleywine like as the nose had with lots of yummy caramel candy laced with dates, figs and prunes. The next note is muted spicy and floral hops mixed with booze, wood, sugar and toffee. Wow. Very interesting. A pleasant mixture for sure. Toward the finish the flavor dwindles down to caramel candy, some dark fruity ester, booze and fur tree. The caramel lingers forever.

Sugar and fruit aroma. Also like a barleywine, just like the 03. This one has aged very well. It is thick and vinous, like a port, but with very minimal grape or wine character. Alcohol burn, which makes it seem ever more like liquor. Flavor is quite sweet, and minimal hops. I’m going against the grain on this one.

RBSG 2007 Grand Tasting. Cloudy orange body with a small white head. Sweet malty caramel aroma. Sweet caramel and molassas flavor.

Cloudy orange-brown body, thin off-white head. Caramels and light fruit (incuding lemon) attempted to fend off skunky hops aromas but mostly failed. Skunky, leafy hops dominated the flavor which was otherwise mostly big caramels, toast, sweet brown sugar, and a hint of lemon. Full-bodied. There may have been a hint of cardboard in this beer too. I wasn’t too offended by this beer, which had its good points, but I am probably being generous with my rating. Provided by John (JCW) and sampled with Brodie and BelgianGirl.

Bottle. Pink tinged peach-orange color body with rosy copper hues and a very hazy, sediment laden look. Peering in to the bottle, it has a large dose of sediment sitting at the bottom. Small white head, very rapidly dissipating. Aroma of pure noble hops, cut with alcohol and sweet, sweet, sweet honeyish malt. Light caramel and toffee butt in, but the alcohol still asserts its dominance. Despite the alcohol, and the shudder I have upon first sip, it grows on me. Perhaps because the hops are so well controlled and flavorful. Perhaps because this beer makes ample use of the malt to try and mask the alcohol, instead of using the hops. Maybe it’s just a nice change of pace, but this is tastey stuff. Who put this in as an ASA???
