Richard Roper’s brew combines his love of hops with his affinity for spicy Belgian ales. The toasty caramel sweetness from the malt and Belgian candi sugar are balanced by distinct citrus hop notes, spicy yeast fermentation and hunts of orange and coriander.

Purchased at Breeze Thru Liquors in Milwaukee, WI; enjoyed on a random Wednesday after work. Appearance is a slightly cloudy amber with a thin white head, tiny carbonation bubbles rise to the top. Aroma really is complex, mostly spice/clove notes than anything with hints of banana, bubble gum, maybe pear in there, definitely a Belgian aroma mixed with some earthy hops. Taste is pretty sweet, starts off high on the caramel malts and the Belgian candi, then kind of winds its way down in the tail end with a nice bitterness. I’m really surprised this is a 9% ABV, the alcohol is masked nicely. I’d say this is an American, hopped up version of a Belgian ale, and it’s pretty damn good! - Final note, this goes HORRIBLY with homemade fish tacos. Wouldn’t recommend pairing with that dish.

12oz bottle pours clear copper with off white head. The aroma is sweet with apples and pear as well as spicy with yeastiness, spicy hops and maybe coriander too. The taste is sweet and only feebly cut by a fairly timid level of hoppiness. I get sweet apples and pears rolling over thin layers of spicy hops and spicy yeast. To midway it picks up coriander like spiciness and sweet honey. The apple, pear and honey trio take this into the finish. It does manage to get a bit dryer into the finish sort of like a mouth full of apple/pear flavored cotton candy.

12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear, dark gold color with a thin beige head. The aroma is oranges, intense pine and citrus hops, apple and bubblegum esters, and faint nutty and bready malts. The flavor is sweet and spicy up front, with a smooth bitterness in the middle and finish. The palate is light to medium, smooth and clean, with only a faint aftertaste. An amazingly complex and balance beer.

Clear copper pour - minimal head - Nose of candi sugar, alcohol, spicy phenols, caramel and an odd sort of rum character - Taste is, thankfully, a bit better, but the Biscuity malt and hop profile taste almost more British than Belgian - all wrong for the style, so the spicy phenols kicked out by the yeast seem out of place - the moderately strong phenols, plus the relatively potent bitterness of the hops both make the added orange peel and coriander not only unnecessary, but also make the flavor abrasive and overbearing - alcohol is far too apparent - I am often a fan of these longshot beers, but not this one.

12 oz bottle a gift from Kiapepito and Enniskillen they got at Bevmo Salinas. Nose is bubblegum, sweetness, caramel, and light cloves. Clear copper orange with a small, lightly lacing beige head. Flavor is lightly sweet, yeastiness, carmelized sugar, and a very light background bitterness.

Bottle from the Beer Shop in Davis, CA. Pours rather orange with a creamy off-white head. Aroma is spicy; seems clove. It is sweetish, has some citrus. There’s a lot of flavor packed into this one. It really develops a hoppiness, but I’d say its fruit or floral. On balance it is more sweet than not, but there’s so much hop and spice that that doesn’t matter. Drinks really well.

Smells like banana bubblegum, with a touch of citric hops in the background. Pours decent, clear orange gold with a modest but sticky head. Tastes slowly evolve, coming as close as possible to good, but never quite making an impression. The malts are honey-like and sweet, the hops are floral and bitter, and there’s a bit of coriander that plays with the finish. These flavors are all fine and good, but, when combined with the peppery alcohol spikiness that outlines the beer, they fail to reach the needed intensity to offset the burn. The hops don’t play that much of a role in this brew, so feel free to let it sit a few months.

Bottle. Pours clear amber. White head. Great lacing. Nose/taste of orange peel, coriander, Belgian yeast and hops. Coriander really adds a level of sweetness to the beer.
