Smoked Brown Ale

Holger Dankse is a legendary Danish hero, one of Charlemagne’s knights in the Chanson de Roland and inspiration for Denmark’s World War II resistance group. First brewed in collaboration with our great friend and mentor Anders Kissmeyer in 2010, we continue to brew this robust, malty smoked brown ale in the spirit of that first brewday. Portions of the malt are hand-smoked on site with apple, cherry, and maple wood from the surrounding orchards and forests, emphasizing the wide-ranging connections across time and place.

750mL growler, sent from Glouglouburp (thanks a lot, Dany), pours a deep dark mahogany / brown with a small beige head. Aroma is moderately smoky, light roasted malt, toasted nuts and caramel. Flavour is very subtly smoky, with loads of roasted caramel malt, some brown sugar without being very sweet. Not intensely smoky, but intensely flavourful more so from the roasted and caramel malt presence. Very well-rounded. Most excellent - one of the best smoked beers I've ever had.

The ChrisO small midweek tasting. Thanks Leighton for this rare treat. Clear dark red - amber beer. Little pale tan head. Light soft palate. Smooth sweetish malts with mellow smoke and a little mild citrus. Hands together well.

A dark clear reddish brown ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, a smooth coffee roasted malt with light peaty notes. In mouth, a nice caramel malt with light peaty character, nice grassy British hops, vinous qualities, light phenolics. On tap at Ginger Man NYC, Sept 21, 2012.

Tap at Gingerman. Pours dark brown with not a heavily smoky nose. Tastes of light tobacco smoke, small peat but both of these are subdued. Also get coffee, berry, and pine. Very easyvdrinking for a smoked beer.

Growler at Chriso - 25/09/12 thanks to Leighton for this one. Dark chestnut brown with a thin off-white head. Good smokey nose, nuts, coffee and a little chocolate. Taste follows nose great roasted malt and smoke combo. Medium bodied with light spritzy carbonation. Great rausch!

Growler, many thanks to Leighton at ChrisO. It pours very dark brown, with a thin light tan head. The nose is lightly smokey, smoked Bavarian ham, roasted malt and some honey in the background. The taste is roasted malt, charcoal, light smoke, earth, caramel, treacle, dark fruit, berry, jam, light spice and filter coffee. Medium body and fine-medium carbonation. Flavoursome and well balanced. A very nice smoked beer indeed.

Growler fill from Hill Farmstead today. Enjoyed in a small HFS wine glass at slightly above fridge temp.

A - Poured with a very low amount of carbonation. Didn’t even produce a head..just a small ring of off-white bubbles. Medium/Dark brown with a lot of amber color around the edges.

S - A lot of smoke scent. Hints of almonds and walnuts, smoke (cedar and birch wood). There’s a hint of espresso bean.

T - Oh wow. Such a nice balance on this. Yes, it’s smokey almost like the ash from a campfire. However, there’s a hint of chocolate, some espresso and a hint of almonds. It’s a solid beer but the balance between the smoke and other flavors is unmatched.

M -

O - If you’re a fan of smoke beers, this is the ticket. It’s very interesting. I’m not a fan of this style but it’s still drinkable and delicious. I’m not a fan of this style but it is the best smoked beer I’ve had.

On tap at Beachwood BBQ. Pours with a black body and a huge and lasting brown head (almost seems like it is nitro, but I don’t think that it is). Aroma of chocolate, smoke, vanilla, brown sugar and a lot of fruit based esters. Flavors are smokey with barbecue, woodsie, earthy, and a noticeably bitter finish. Super creamy mouthfeel. Well done.
