From old tasting notes. Labeled as "Cuvée NotreDame Belgian Style Abbey Double". Hazy reddish brown color. Creamy beige head. Soft fruity candy-like malt nose. Tangy fruity malt flavor hints at prunes and currants. There’s an underlying yeastiness that imparts a uniqueness to this ale. Very good indeed. Nice Belgian lace.

RBSG 07. Light brown color and no visible sediment. A standard quality dubbel that is solid but doesn’t do anything to impress. It definitely does have a Belgian character, primarily from the yeast, but also the sweet malt flavor with some fruit. It does taste quite good, even if it doesn’t offer anything new.

2003, bottle similarly as puzzl below I bought mine at the same store. My experience was not as bad. Pours with no head and a bit of lacing. Beer definitely seems to have left its best years behind but holding on to some fond memories (a la Junior Soprano in the first season). A good amount of the aroma is that cardboard, old caramel, dusty malt. Its good but a part of you knows its a little bad. Some oaky vanilla, some chocolate in the background with a bit of cherry. Taste is getting a bit thin with that musky caramel, a bit soda like flavors. Leaves a sweet oaky vanilla aftertaste. Medium carbonation, low bitterness.

Blind double tastingSampled August 2004. Bottle is dated 06/2003 so about 14 months old is this one. Pours a very thick brownish-grey, dark and muted. Good off-cream colored head. Aroma of sweet raisins, creamy oatmeal, tons of chocolate (milk chocolate) and a hint of yeast. Flavor is intensely chocolatey! Wow they nailed that aspect. Yeast is moderately apparent, with light banana/bubble gum. Grows even sweeter towards the end, with some notes of lightly dry, lightly spicy hops. I can find no fruit in my bottle however, which was my biggest problem with this one. The lightly bitter hops gave it away as not so authentic, as I drank this in a blind tasting. Very rich and caramelly tons of chocolate, good thick, almost creamy body, but where are the esters?? Gets very boring after having a glass of it. Still, I have to give credit to the malt and body, it holds up very well and is rich and smooth, just not terribly on style for a dubbel.

Dark copper colour with a thin off-white head. Aroma of toffee, light malt and light fruityness. Medium-bodied; Flavourful maltiness with caramel and light coffee showing. Aftertaste clean but some roasted malt flavours come through. Overall, a decent beer, decent for the style but not exemplary! I sampled this 765 mL bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits in Washington, D.C. on 28-December-2003.

A decent take on the style - yeasty aroma, dark red color, zero head - mildly sweet flavor, with hints of grapes, grain, slight grassiness - vinous a bit - sticky, malty finish - good, but lack a certain depth that most American-made belgians do.

Mahogany coloured. Nutty aroma with notes of camembert cheese. Malty, rather sweet and complex with soft mouthfeel. Nice toffee flavour. A full flavoured, but dangerously drinkable abbey double. Thanks jca_lbi for sending me this and many other excellent beers!!
