This year's Stone Vertical Epic ale might justifiably be considered the non sequitur edition. We somehow came to the conclusion that adding Anaheim chiles from New Mexico's Hatch Valley, plus whole cinnamon sticks, to an amber-hued brew fermented with Belgian Flanders Golden Ale yeast (which provides fairly intense character with lots of clove & banana overtones) would create a very tasty result. And we believe it does! The Anaheim chile pepper is known for its rich flavor more than endorphin-inducing heat, and the cinnamon adds a nice twist...part of the promise behind the Vertical Epic Ale series itself. As with any epic, remember that it is not just the destination, but the journey!

Hazy amber, beige head. Big aroma of chiles, smoke, sweet doughy malts, and some light spices. Low carb, and a full mouthfeel. Flavour is very much like jalapeno jelly, with some spices, and smoke. Not heat fromthe chilies, just flavour.

Well, the 10.10.10 I finished earlier came out fine, so I have high hopes for this. Darker amber than the previous beer, kicking up a large off-white head. Light malt smell with still a note of cinnamon. Cinnamon taste builds, but does not take over. Thicker caramel roast malts. But then some interesting mix of oxidization, lactic acid, and still a bit of hop bitterness. Only sorry I didn't rate one when it was fresh.

Bomber from Buckeyeboy. Mahogany pour, cloudy, small bubbly head. Cinnamon stiil there, chilies only present as a light tingle at the finish. Belgian notes? Not finding them. Comes off more as a Barleywine or old ale. Elements of leather, tobacco, malts, woody. Not much heat. But still a pretty good quaff. Has aged well.

Bottle 650 ml. 4 years old. Bronze-amber color with noisy cream foam. Aroma: pleasant, sweetness and port wine, malt, caramel, toffee, dried fruits, plums, raisins, cinnamon and other spices, light chilies. Taste: malt sweetness, port wine or sherry, caramel, toffee and dried fruits (figs, raisins, plums and apricots), spices, cinnamon. Finish rather dry with chilies and hop bitterness. Great brew, good balanced (thanks aging).
