A smooth well balanced traditional ruby bitter. Five different malts including crystal and amber create a rich toffee/cherry flavour. Earthy Fuggles and Goldings hops combine in a smooth English character with hints of kiwifruit and toffee.
Great with sausages or a Sunday roast. Also good with mature cheddar.

Bottle. Ruby colour, clear, small head. Aroma is nuts, toffee, a bit of herbal hops. Medium bitterness, no sweetness. Smooth, easy to drink. A very good example of English bitter.

Light brown/dark red, small and weak head that recedes quickly. Aroma is fruity (cherry?), slightly nutty, maybe with a hint of earthiness. Taste is mostly sweet with toffee and some fruitiness. A hint of tea-like bitterness in the finish and in the aftertaste. Light to medium body, very light carbonation; smooth and easy, a bit too thin. The overall feeling is good as the beer is very smooth and drinkable; still, not much is going on

Cask @ Marriott Hotel, Durham. It’s a brownish ruby-red ale with a creamy head. It has a bushy sweet berry and floral aroma with a dry and fairly unexciting flavour in this respect.

50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. A gushing chestnut pour with a billowing light tan head; earthy, nutty aroma; sweet, earthy, malt taste; and a pleasant earthy bitterness before a sweet demerara sugar finish. More an Old Ale than an ESB.

Bottle, at Cardinal. An unclear, dark amber colored beer with a dense, two-finger sized off-white to light beige head. The aroma has toffee, bread and nut notes, with some dried fruits. There’s some bitterness in the flavor, with the same maltyness known from the aroma dominating. Nuts, caramel and bread crust. Full to medium body, a bit high carbonation level. A quite tasteful one, but it gives me nothing. Too boring, but sort of sessionable. 140627

500ml bottle from the brewery, shared with AshtonMcCobb. Pours dark red-brown, very thin off-white head. Aromas of dried fruit, cake mix, toffee. Taste is nutty, more dark stone fruit - almost prunes, Ash says - chewy, long finish.

Bottle from the brewery. Appearance - dark brown with a decent head. Some red chinks. Nose - cake and dried fruit. A bit dry. Taste - almost prunes, more cake and generally a lot more generous than the nose. Palate - close to medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a dry balanced finish. Overall - yep, good premium bitter.
