Bottles and cans since inception.
Clear, dark chestnut-tinged (in the light), dark mahogany-to-ebony. Butter-to-dark beige head atop is medium-sized showing moderate retention.
Some ash, char and molasses quickly gives way to fruitier, light roast, light caramel and vanilla with strong, somewhat dull, mineral character.
Soft-to-slick in the mouth with an oily-to-sticky texture at times, as well. Molasses, milk chocolate and vanilla with interludes of sweetness and fruity roast interspersed with somewhat low and loose carbonation creating a watery feel. Clean, heavy mineral, no alcohol. Some dull ash.

Can pour into nonic pint glass from Greg & Jane's Beer and Wine. Appearance is very dark brown--almost opaque black--with no sparkle, finger width, fizzy, light brown head with poor retention and no lacing. Aroma is dominant, strong roasted/burnt malts, bordering on ash, perhaps a hint of chocolate and lactose. Taste is strong roasted malts (not as burnt as aroma) with chocolate (more apparent than aroma) and late bitter. Palate is medium bodied with smooth, but somewhat watery, texture (like drinking very soft, demineralized, water), lively carbonation and mix of sweet and bitter roasted, dry finish. Overall, not a bad beer by any stretch of the imagination but was expecting so much more from this brewer, so in that context a bit disappointing.

Pours a dark brown from a bottle with a quickly disappearing minimal off-white head. Aroma is a chocolate ester, flavor is a slight dark chocolate with a little licorice. Palate is a little thin for a stout in my opinion. Okay beer.

On tap at CBS Scene/Patriot Place, MA. Reviewed from notes. Consumed Feb 2, 2013.
The appearance has a dark black body with a half finger white head that concaved in the middle to leave clingy lacing along the pint glass.
The smell is roasty with some light coffee up front, but as it warmed the oatmeal came out.
The taste is basically the same as the previously mentioned flavors in the smell, however the oatmeal is more forward than the smell as it didn’t need to warm up as much to get that taste.
On the palate, its about a medium with nothing harsh on the tongue. A good dry bitter aftertaste and finish accompanied the mouthfeel.
Overall, this is a good oatmeal stout that I would come back to.

22oz bottle pours an inky black with some thin beige head. Nose is nice, licorice, malty, brown sugar, cakey. Flavor is the same, sweet, malty, brown sugar, coffee, bread crust. Dry finish.

Pours a solid dark brown color with a faint garnet highlight when held to light. Decent sized tan head quickly dissipates to a cap. Smells of roasted and cereal grains, milk chocolate, caramel, a hint of earthy hops. The flavor is rich and dark chocolate up front with a hint of vanilla and caramel. Light earthy hop flavor with little to no hop bitterness. Medium body with a light level of carbonation and a creamy, silky smooth mouthfeel. This is a nice sweet stout, I enjoyed it.

12 oz. bottle from Julio’s Liquors. Pitch black in an English pint, showing full, beige head that dissipated quite fast. Leaving little in its wake. Spotty lacing. Nose is oats and burnt chocolate malt. Flavors of roasted barley, burnt coffee, light chocolate and vanilla notes hiding in the finish. A touch of sweetness as well. Medium body with average Co2. Kind of chewy mouthfeel, big oat presence. This is a nice representation on how a stout would have tasted 250 years ago. Nice job Mayflower! Real tasty.
