Very dark brown color. Huge nose of cacao, pepper, coffee, dark chocolate and roasted malts. Very nice sweet malty. Sweet, full bodied, lots of pepper, coffee, caramel, alcohol so well hidden. Mildly sweet. Perfectly put together with coffee and pepper lingering in the finish.

On tap at the Bottle Shop: Druid Street. Pours black with small tan head. Lots of chocolate, roasted coffee, vanilla, bit spicy. Sweetish but just right. Thick and oily. Bit warming, but alcohol is well hidden. Smooth. Full bodied, complex. Truly a great brew.

0.355 l bottle from ’Saveur Bière’, assumingly 2015 vintage. Pitch black with a thin, frothy, brown layer. Sweetish, moderately roasty, slightly peppery and a little boozy aroma of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla and mocca. Sweet, roasty taste of dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, mocca and licorice, followed by a long, roasty-bitter, peppery and slightly warming finish. Full body, creamy and viscid mouthfeel, almost flat. Really tasty, superb mouthfeel, just at the edge of being too peppery. Overall very good!

BOTTLE 12 OZ. Pitch black with a beige head. Tons of coffee and cacao in the nose, that, along with the sweetness and the hot peppers, makes it feel like a liquid chili-flavoured chocolate. The taste is super big! Sweet, but only moderately so, molasses, dark caramel and coffee followed by a moderate bitterness that is half hops and half cilies. The alcohol just adds to the spice. Despite all the intensity, the body is quite easy drinking. An excellent beer.

dark brown colour, medium sized dense brown head; aroma of coffee, chocolate, vanilla and some earthy-woody notes; taste of chocolate, mild roasted coffee, syrupy sweetness, some herbs and intensive spiciness of chili in the aftertaste; extraordinary beer; perfect choice to celebrate my 100th imperial stout rating :-) update after half hour: as it is warming, the chili is becoming more and more dominant in the taste :-) really-really-really amazing!

355 ml bottle from BeerLovers Vienna, bottled 21/5/15.
Pitch black, oily liquid, with a tiny, coffee-colored head.
Aroma of chili, pepper, espresso, liquorice, cocoa powder, wood, dark chocolate, vanilla, dark fruits.
Wonderful, complex, dense taste, with the same aromas and a great balance between sweet, roasty, dry, some booziness and a medium hot spiciness.
Full, oily mouthfeel, with a moderate carbonation.
Finishes warm, quite boozy, medium hot, medium dry, roasty, moderate bitter, a bit sweet.
Very tasty! Quite hot and peppery, but well integrated into the heavy, complex, roasty-sweet malt body, with lovely, dry coffee notes. Drinks quite smooth despite the booziness, which isn’t too overpowering. Really characterful and also well balanced sipper, while not among my very favourite style examples.

Bottle from SD at home in HK. Really nice looking - thick black pour with dark mocha brown thin head. Aroma is huge vanilla, milk chocolate, plum-like ancho chili. Lots going on. Taste is similarly complex - huge chocolate coffee bitterness followed by booze followed by chili heat in the throat. Lasting dark chocolate/espresso bitterness with boozy warmth, enhanced by the chili. Palate is rich but a little bit powdery. Wow as it warms it gets spicier. Very nice use of chili. Really good complex imperial stout, only disappointment is texture. Had again on tap at TAP for Prairie Artisan launch in Nov 2017. Delicious and holds up. Leathery on the nose. Taste super complex. Chocolate vanilla and coffee. Chili is so so well done - probably the best infusion of chili in a beer I’ve had. So subtle but can’t miss it. Chocolate is nice too. Raised to 4.2 from 4.1

Highly acclaimed, flavoured imperial stout from Oklahoma’s Prairie Artisan Ales, tasted at Struise’s shop in Brugues. Creamy, medium thick, pale yellowish beige, more or less stable head over a black beer with slightly ruby-hued edges. Amazing and mouth watering bouquet of milk chocolate, vanilla, roasted paprika, cappuccino, marzipan, coconut, fine coffee, haemoglobin, Belgian chocolates, stewed beef, brown sugar and fairly strong paint- or varnish-like solvents, however drowned in this big maltiness and spiciness and therefore not in the least disturbing or off-putting. Rich, thick taste, intense but refined candied sweetness (dried banana, coconut, dates, marmelade) with soft mushroom-like umami aspects and basic sourishness, soft carbo, layer upon layer of sweet, thick, viscous and oily maltiness, caramelly, deliciously and intensely chocolatey and eventually mildly roasted with sugared coffee flavours, absolutely divine retronasal vanilla and bell pepper rather than sharp chili peppers, no real chili pepper burn but certainly spicy and tangy in the end, on top of ongoing chocolate sweetness and warming, bourbon-like alcohol drying the end phase without becoming tiring at any point. This is absolutely delicious; in terms of style, it clearly belongs to the sweeter, syrupy end of the imperial stout scale, with an overall result that seems in fact closer to imperial porter than imperial stout. Whatever the case, this is a masterpiece of American craft brewing, as far as I’m concerned.
