Berliner Braun aged in bourbon barrels with cherries. This beer is a darker and stronger version of a Berliner Weisse. By implementing a sour mash procedure, an intense lactic and sour character emerges. It was then aged in bourbon barrels with tart cherries. Fruity, citrusy, dry, and quite tart.

Draught at Meadhall, 5th anniversary party, 7/27/16.
A deep, cherry-burgundy color to the body, quite clear, with little/no head. No retention.
Wood tannin, light oxidation, dry, grainy wheat and light cereal grains and very dry, tart cherry juice notes. Maybe some earthy, old, musty yeast/bacteria....
Just about flat in the mouth, with a very dry, tart cherry flavor, wood tannin, light oak and tart, grainy wheat. It all combines to provide very little brightness, no livliness and nowhere for this surplus of acid and cherry flavor to go. It just sort of dully sits around on the palate, while collecting on the uncarbonated, muted finish. Some sweetness would help, but it’s really the lack of carbonation and tired feel to the beer as a whole. Makes you wonder why brewers put stuff like this on draught. This was much worse than my rating suggests, but I’m not going to completely pan the beer, as I don’t think it’s that bad, this was just a horrible, old, flat sample of it.

The beer is a brownish red color. It’s fairly hazy. The head is off white and fizzy. It fades quickly and no bubbles remain. The aroma is cherries, oak, mild bourbon and a healthy dose of lactic sour Berliner character. It smells a lot like a cherry cider. The flavor is moderately sour, pretty light before the beer warms up to room temp. The flavors from the barrel and the base beer are milder than expected. It has a fairly strong tannic quality from the oak, a drying wood bitterness. It could be a bit drier with sharper acidity. As is, the beer is somewhat lackluster. It’s an interesting idea and definitely not bad, but it just feels like the oak sapped the beer’s life somewhat.

First bottle of the tasting - thanks Felipe! Pours hazy reddish hazel, kinda pretty actually. Minimal head or lacing. Aroma is hugely woody, cherry and oak tannins fighting dominance. Flavor is medium tart, lightly funky, lots of oak here too and a bit vinous, toffee notes and a bit of cherry round things out. Fairly light on the body. Enjoyable little beer, whatever the hell it is...

Pour ruby-tinged mahogany into a Sam glass. Mocha head crackles and recedes to nothing. Sweet oak, cherry and caramel aromas. Tart upfront with cherry, oak and vanilla turning thin before the medium length, mildly lactic finish.
