Sample at the Beer/Port/Mead/Homebrew Tasting on 07/20/2017. Brown-black pour with a medium tan head that recedes steadily to an outer ring. Partial rings of lacing. Aroma of bourbon, blueberry and malt. Medium body with flavors of oaky bourbon, blueberry and chocolate malt. The finish is oaky with a bourbon and berry aftertaste. Good beer overall.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 6/5/2017. Pours opaque dark brown/black color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense and rocky dark tan head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of big juicy/lightly tart blueberries, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, coffee, and dark bread; with lighter notes of bourbon, toasted oak, smoke, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of dark/roast/bready malt, blueberries, and light-moderate bourbon barrel notes; with great strength. Taste of big juicy/lightly tart blueberries, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, coffee, and dark bread; with lighter notes of bourbon, toasted oak, smoke, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness. Light roasted bitterness and fruit tartness; with slight bourbon/oak spiciness on the finish. Lingering notes of juicy/lightly tart blueberries, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toffee, vanilla, coffee, dark bread, light bourbon/toasted oak, and roast/toast/oaky earthiness on the finish for a while. Great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, blueberries, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; with a great roasted bitter/sweet and fruit tartness balance, with zero cloying flavors after the finish. Slight dryness from roast bitterness and fruit tartness as well. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a very smooth, moderately creamy/silky, and lightly chalky/acidic/tannic balanced mouthfeel that is great. Zero warming alcohol as expected of 7.5%. Overall this is an awesome fruited American stout! All around great complexity, robustness, and balance of dark/roast/bready malt, blueberries, and light-moderate bourbon barrel flavors; very smooth and easy to drink with the mildly tart/bitter finish. Great balance of fruit and stout; barrel isn’t huge, but you get nice pleasing amounts of barrel complexities, without any booze. A really enjoyable offering.

Sampled from the tap at GTMW 2016. Pours black with a dark brown head that dissipates to the edges. Aroma has a good amount of blueberry that pairs with the dark grains, roasted malts and bourbon barrel well. Flavor has a strong roasted malt and dark grains note with blueberry and a hint of bourbon in the finish.

On tap at MBGSF 2016. Pours black with a tan head. Lots of blueberry leading the aroma, cocoa, bourbon. Blueberry very strong in the flavor as well, chocolate, bourbon, creamy. I already thought the blueberry mix in Tres was great, and it’s a perfect choice for bourbon aging; it’s even better now.

Poured from a 12 oz, 2015 vintage bottle. Aroma is malty with quite a bit of chocolate, roast, ash and tobacco. Moderately strong bourbon notes with some light oak and coconut. Light berry notes and other dark fruit. Pours black with a medium small, moderateky thick, mocha head that quickly recedes to the edges where it lingers. Faint lacing and medium small legs. Flavor is moderately sweet with some dark chocolate and medium light berry notes. Some light caramel, medium light roast, light ash, faint tobacco and leather. Medium light bourbon notes with hints of oak. Berry becomes more pronounced as it warms. Moderate bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly syrupy with medium carbonation. Medium astringency and low alcohol warmth. Overall, better than I was expecting. While the mouthfeel is a bit weird and astringent, the flavor is pretty good and the aroma is very nice. Bourbon barrel doesn’t overwhelm and instead adds some nice complexity. Too much black patent or other overly roasted malt.
