Hearty malts meld with a subtle balance of hops to create a dark and nurturing ale of comfort and complexity. Hints of bittersweet chocolate and espresso fill the tongue, finishing with just a touch of smoke. Not too sweet or filling, this versatile dark ale dissuades the notion that a darker beer is a stronger beer. Five varieties of roasted malts are the source of Porter’s dark color and rich taste, while two varieties of hops bring a mellow bite to this deep toasty ale.

Porter is our darkest beer, but not necessarily our strongest. It is widely held that the darker the beer, the stronger the beer, but this is summarily false. The contribution of color comes directly from the color of malt that we use. Some malt is roasted to achieve dark color and coffee-like flavor which in turn get transferred to the beer. Our Porter is richly complex with overtones of chocolate and espresso beans followed by a subtle flavor of hops. It’s a nourishing beer without being too sweet or filling

355 mml bottle tasted the 09/10/2014. Very dark brown colour with a small off-white head. Aroma is very roast and coffee. The taste is roasted malts, coffee, black chocolate and a little bitter. Medium body and light carbonation. The aftertaste is dry with the presence of the black coffee. Next one please!

Reviewed from notes.
American Porter deserves to be poured into a pint glass.
The appearance was a dark brown close to black color with a nice settling one finger white foamy head that left a light somewhat clingy lacing after the head dissipated within about a minute.
The smell had a hearty dark roasted sweet maltiness that let in a light earthy bitterness. Light chocolate ends up coming in near the end.
The taste was semi-sweet with the dark roasty sweet maltiness fulfilling my taste buds.
On the palate, this one sat about a medium on the body with a slight sessionability to it. The carbonation seemed to be good for the style as it was just sharp enough but also still slightly smooth enough.
Overall, I say this was a good American Porter to have again.

12oz bottle from Wegman’s, Buffalo, NY. Deep mahogany with a thin cream head; earthy aroma with some coffee and chocolate; sweet in the mouth with smoky chocolate malt taste; and some coffee grounds to finish. A decent porter.

Bottle: Pours dark cola, with a huge, chunky tan head. Aroma is light coffee, lighter chocolate. Taste is mild coffee, cream, slightly dry cocoa powder. Tastes pretty good, but it certainly lacks any punch. Very thin.

12 ounce bottle into pint glass, bottled on 1/21/2013. Pours crystal clear very dark reddish brown color with a 1-2 finger dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light soapy lacing clings around the glass. Aromas of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, toffee, coffee, biscuit, light nuttiness, floral, and toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/roasted malt notes; with solid strength. Taste of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, toffee, light coffee, biscuit, light nuttiness, and toasted earthiness. Light earthy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of chocolate, cocoa, caramel, toast, toffee, light coffee, biscuit, and light nuttiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, robustness, and complexity of dark/roasted malt notes; with a good sweet/roast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a creamy and smooth mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice porter style. All around good balance and robustness of flavors; and very smooth to drink. A very enjoyable offering.
