Score

ABV: 10.0% IBU: 50 Ticks: 47
The base of this beer is Ongelovige Thomas. New American white oak soaked in Kenau has been added, which makes the beer much stronger and gives it a hint of vanilla. Because the wood is soaked in Kenau, the beer is named Jopen Thomas en Kenau.

Full-bodied flavour with vanilla, whiskey, oak, some roasted hints of chocolate and plenty of fruit (blackberries and brambles) because of the American hops varieties. Dominant smooth and fruity flavour the result of the new American white oak.

Bottle at home. Aroma is lots of oak, vanilla, malts, raisins, caramel, hint of coconut, toffee, dried fruity notes, some alcohol. Flavour is sweet, a bit sticky. Finish is dry, body is above medium. Certainly a fine Quad with a big oaky vanilla aroma, I expected a bit more from the US hops.

Bottled. Amber colour with small off white head. Aroma is boubon, vanilla, toffee, some dried dark fruits, caramel, sugary and mild smoked notes. Flavour is quite similar as the aroma, but the smoked notes are a bit more evident. Nice smoke meeting sweetness to it.

From the bottle. Probably a 2016 from wombat23. Pours brown with an off-white crown that lingers. Copious lacing. Aroma is probably more oak than I have ever smelled in a beer before. Smells like an outdoor lumberyard after a rainstorm. No, not fresh oak. Rather, it reminds me of old furniture that’s been rained on. A bit of searching reveals subtle vanilla and caramel undertones. Taste is sweet, full of caramel and toffee but with an oak astringency that is a overdone. Finishes warm and full of oak. Body is medium to full, carbonation is mild, very warming and alcoholic but the ABV stays fairly well disguised. Overall good but I would like to see a broader range of flavors.

330 ml bottle. Pours a reddish mahogany with moderate head. Aromas of buttery oak and sweet malts. Flavors of clean oak, raisins, and smooth toasted malts with a light bitter finish. Creamy and full. Very nice.

Damn nice surprise, oak aged quad with what I can only assume is bourbon. --- Beer merged from original tick of Thomas en Kenau on 13 Jun 2017 at 12:52 - Score: Appearance - 8 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 8 | Overall - 8. Original review text: 33cl bottle. Clear dark amber pour with a light tan head. Notes of bourbon, vanilla, dried fruit, toffee, caramel, wood, very subtle smoke. Quite a complex beer, really nice. Smooth texture, light carbonation, mostly sweet finish.
