Manchester Star was a brew discovered in an old recipe book (from about one hundred years ago). Manchester Star is a 7.3% ABV, dark ale, with chocolate, malty overtones and a warming finish made from 100% British ale malt, chocolate malt and Goldings hops. Manchester Star Ale is available in 100 Sainsbury’s stores nationwide (check which stores stock Manchester Star Ale near you).

0.5L bottle pours deep darkness with nice looking mocha head. The aroma is at first roasty with a mix of malt balls, roasted malts, a dash of chocolate and then a load of sweet dark fruity esters. The taste is as dark fruit heavy as the nose with sweet Concord grape preserves, huckleberries and sugar coated black currents. A note of sweet molasses adds to the experience along with mild amounts of roasted malts, chocolate malts and black licorice.

Pour is a black with a tan head. Light chocolate aroma with some molasses and pepper. Flavor is deffinalty tobacco and some molasses. Finish is creamy and thick. Just above par for a porter and would probably be great with a cigar as it would bring out more of the tobacco quality.

Bottle. Dark toffee colored beer with a tan head. Light toffee aroma. Toffee, caramel, earthy flavor with backing hops. Medium body. Toffee lingers. Nice. Very drinkable.

Smooth roasted malt aroma with chocolate notes. Essentially black in color with ruby hilites at the edges. The tan head never really arrived, just came flat and ringed. Full bodied with mild smooth carbonation. Flavor is roasted malt, dry, with varying fruits. Something of tobacco is arguable. Chocolate goes back and forth. Finish is a very nice, smooth clean sensation. Not really bitter at all. Drinks a bit like a port, but the flavor and alcohol aren’t similar. More baltic porters should move this direction. It’s really a good drink.

16.9oz bottle-pours a light brown head with bubbles and dark brown color. Aroma is caramel/toffee/molasses-dark/medium malt, some earthy. Taste is caramel/toffee/molasses/dark fruit/licorice-dark/medium malt, some earthy/bitter hops. Medium/full body. Good cold weather beer. OK carbonation. Thanks jwc215 for sharing.

The owner of Aldgate pulled this bottle out and shared it with the few of us at his pub that night. Black with deep tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, plums, raisins, caramel, and some sherry. Full, smooth body. Flavor is similar to the aroma with the dark fruits really showing through. Roasted caramel malts, tobacco. I couldn’t get enough of this brew.

The aroma has raspberry and red wine. Flavor is sour and the carbonation is almost nil. Sweet and malty, after the initial sourness. i didn’t get the complexity promised by the description, but it is much more complex and interesting than most porters. Draught at Town Hall, 1/26/2007.

Bottle courtesy of Hogtownharry: Poured a light black color ale with a big foamy head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of black chocolate is very enticing with some nice English malt also noticeable. Taste of lightly sweet chocolate malt is very good and dominated the taste spectrum. Body was slightly watery with some medium carbonation. This was a very good beer but it is lacking a little something to be truly great.

Dark brown, nearly opaque, with a small ring of tan lace - quite an interesting aroma, that starts out heavily vinous, with a nearly tannic tartness, followed by mildly sweet malts and a hint of smoke - the flavor begins with a semi-dry, red wine/port-like character that is more consistent with certain barleywines than with porters - I’m liking that...a lot - some caramel and chocolate sweetness swell up from beneath that, along with some mild roasted/smoked malts - slight acidity, and a bit of coffee and tobacco near the lingering, semi-sweet finish - a bloody brilliant beer.

Very dark brown. Chocolatey, citric aroma. Sweet and sour flavour is fruity, chocolatey, and complex. Sorry if I didn’t pick up the moist Cavendish tobacco...my bad...but it’s a nice rendition of old school porter, a style I almost always enjoy.
