Riggwelter Ale takes its name from a local Yorkshire Dales farming term which has Norse roots; “rygg” meaning back, and “velte” meaning to overturn. A sheep is said to be rigged or ‘riggwelted’ when it has rolled onto its back and is unable to get back up without assistance.
Riggwelter has a wonderfully complex palate with hints of coffee, bananas and liquorice combining for a classic Golding hop finish.

500 ml bottle. Well, another day made progressively lousier with the passage of time, let’s see if this can brighten things up before bedtime. Nice beery smell upon opening, pours a nice ruby to brown with some cloudiness under a frothy head. Don’t know where those bananas are they refer to, I just get a nice decent English ale feel, with the foam leaving a cola texture on my lips. Okay, some slight fruitness further down, and a solid caramel malt profile with some distinguishing English hops. In fact, I’m getting a bit of spicy hop aftertaste. In fact, the hops really come up front near the end, and that’s new for something outside the pale ale cetegory, sez I. As a strong ale, it holds it alcohol well.

Huge offwhite fine-laced head over dark red body. Faint, sweet, roasty aroma with hop notes. Deep, sweet, harmonic taste of roasty malts with red fruit character and bitter, tarry aftertaste with sweet chocolatey taste lingering. Complex and interesting. This is a great beer!

(Bottle 50 cl) Very dark brown - close to black - with a nice, brownish head. Malty fullness and a dry bitterness - rather marked bitterness actually. Reminds me more of an old fashioned, traditional porter. Odd name - and explanation for it. 140603

Bottle: Dark amber coloured, medium off-white lacing head; malty and fruity nose, a bit vinous, traces of liquorice and roasted malts; dry malty taste, leading to an also dry, slightly bitter (chocolatey) finish. A goodie, especially in winter........

Bottled. Dark copperish ruby colour, beige mediumsized head, lacing. Caramellish and chocolateish aroma with malty hints. Flavour is roasted malt, dark chocolate, sugary sweetness. Nice one, though a bit too sweet. Very enjoyable.
